Yes, too long and boring and mostly a load of old self-aggrandising rubbish.http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
Besides, it didn't mention most of the TT's I have listed and those that it did were mentioned only in passing.

My SP10 that is on Fleecebay. I have a SME 3009/2 arm and a Ortofon 2mBlack to finish it off.
All you will need is a plinth making!
A Technics SL120 or SL150 will give excellent results too.
Isn't a 120 just a 1200 without a tone arm? All you will need is a plinth making!

I prefer direct drive rather than rubber band drive
Look it's all well and good asking advice but it will come down to what you think sounds good. Linn's sound Clear and precise but many dislike them because the "Image" is 2-d. Roksan and PT turntables have a reputation of being very "3-d" but lacking precision. The Rock TT is Ultra Precise and has a foundation type Bass line but many think it lacks a "soul". So you HAVE to listen to the things to get an idea of if they suit YOUR ideals.
"this any good ?

Yes but £4500 and that is the starting price
Is it ten times better than a Pink / entry level LP12 ?
I only paid £2K for my Alfa I could not justify £4k+ on a turntable and I have over 1000 LPs !
If you have the rest of the audio kit to justify it and the cash to invest you will not be disappointed

seen a nice xerxes/artemis for 600 quid which is a bargain i reckon
its from a shop as well so will have been prepped and checked over
might be an idea to build up a cheap system quick quickkly and then see over a few months how much i use it and enjoy it.. and then, if it works out, maybe start thinking about the Goldmund reference
only thing that bothers me is that I remember the xerxes/RB300 being a bit tiring after while, a bit too much IYSWIM. Maybe with the artemis and the right speakers it will be easier on the ear.

The SME T/T is undoubtedly top gear but do you have another £1k for the cartridge and £2k+ for power amps and more for a pre amp and another £1k+ for a phono amp. You will need £2k+ speakers to finish it off.
You could get a Project with an Ortofon Blue and that would give excellent results.
The advantage with DD is you don't get any rumble and you would have to spend a lot more to improve on
this it's bit expensive at £350.
Buy a SME V and you would be hard pushed to tell the difference from the 20 unless you have the rest of the expensive kit.
you started asking over a year, seems like your not in a hurry?

I don't understand all this fascination with the Technics 1200
I had a string of them in the 90's when i used to mix, two 1210's, an SL1500 and another very pro looking one with a rosewood plinth, plus and minus digital pitch buttons and an SME arm (it looked like the BBC studio one but not cut in half). None of them every sounded any good ? They were DJ decks that were good for cueing and of course mixing/scratching.

The DJ deck is a completely different animal to the SL decks. The SL110 is pretty much the same T/T as the SP10 but at a fraction of the cost and in a plinth. The sound is more dependant on the cartridge and arm you choose. If you changed the feet on the SL110 for Isonoe feet you would improve the sound especially the bass.
This is my SP10 with a SME V arm and Vdh Frog cartridge

yep, definitely not on the shorlistas stated, i'd sooner punch myself in the stomach or buy a Binatone all in one for £5 down the local jumble
but don't let me spoil your fun, if you want to spaz on about technics all day long then feel free to start your own thread ... its a big forum out there !
