Thinking of getting a new TV tomorrow and seen 2 sonys at Argos for £499 but which
one is better or is there something even better for the money

Any reason you're using Argos as a reference? Credit vouchers to be used up? Just general handiness?
Assuming you're free to purchase from wherever you like, then neither, would be on my card.
Instead, presuming you're not also going to be sat close enough to make use of the extra resolution a Full HD panel provides with BR movie playback at 1080p, then the 42X20 Panasonic Plasma will keep you more than happily entertained.
Should you fancy a bit of in-built Freeview HD and other features/improvements, then the 42S20 for not much more fits the bill.
If you're into your movies in a big way, then spend the extra again on the G20 model.
