Wharfedale XP2s and speakers in general.
Discussion
I have the opportunity to buy a pair of the aforementioned Wharfedale XP2s for £5. I see that a similar pair sold on e-bay recently for £34. Is there anything obvious I should look for apart from cone damage and crap sound?
On the general info point, do speakers deteriorate over time if not used? Will they be 'better' if they have been driven fairly hard or used at low volume?
TIA.

Wow, that's a blast from the past. I bought a pair of secondhand XP2s probably twenty years ago. Lovely rich sound. Had a faulty tweeter that was repaired by Goodmans (I think that was the company that owned Wharfedale). For a fiver I'd be prepared to just give them a go. If you don't like them then bin them. Cone repair kits are readily available from the web and DIYable, coil damage will be another matter. HTH.

And IIRC they're rated at about 15w RMS - so be careful how much power you put through them.
40 according to the stickersI suspect it states something like "Maximum power handling 40w" or similar - which in reality means 20w RMS (or there abouts).
Found this:
Wharfedale XP2s
The new range of Wharfedale XP2 budgetpriced loudspeakers which is being introduced during the summer contains several of the familiar names of this big-selling series, plus one newcomer, the Shelton. The Chevin XP2 remains largely unchanged. handling 20 watts (DIN) and costing £37 per pair. The Denton XP2 has two new drivers, handles 25 watts and costs £53. Next comes the two-unit Shelton (28 watts, £65). The Linton (35 watts, £80) has new bass and treble units, plus the mid-range from the old Linton 3XP, while the Glendale (40 watts, £105) uses the same mid-range and treble units as the Linton, but with a completely new bass unit.
Found the above here
So I guess it depends if you got the Chevin, Denton, Shelton, Linton or Glendale..
I seem to recall there was a Dovedale XP2 as well....
