Would those in the know still consider old generation Pio's such as the PDP-436XDE and 428XD (42" max size for my lounge) worth making the effort to find on Ebay and the like?

Compared to say, the new line of Panasonic plasma TVs?

Currently have a Kuro LCD which I am a bit fed up with (motion-handling is poor) but kind of want to remain true to the brand!

Seem to be able to get decent quality 436's for about £500 on Ebay....

Bought a 436 about 3 or so years ago brand new, have bought a few other make lcd's since, and the pioneer is still far better

A modern Panasonic plasma will be better than a 3-5 year old Pioneer. Forget about Pioneer. For a another £300 get a brand new Pana g20 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/4940036/art/panaso...

Its a no brainer.

Even for the same £500 outlay, never mind spending more for a G20, the X20 will easily match the 436, if not surpass it.
The Kuros moved things on a fair bit, but the Panasonics even then, weren't exactly crap by comparison.

The older pioneers are good screens and if you already own one there is not a huge compulsion to upgrade at the moment. Its another thing if you new to the market. It's absolutely no sense to buy a 3-5 year old model, does it. Forget about looking for a second hand pioneer and buy a brand spanking new Panasonic model mentioned. Its simply a better screen.
