We have had this TV for 2-3 years, perhaps a little longer

It has been working fine until this afternoon when it switched itself off, and now I cannot turn it back on. No lights at all on the front of the TV. I have tried different plugs, to no avail.

I tried the power cable from my other TV, and it initially turned on, but as soon as it turned on, it turned itself off again and then wouldnt turn back on. I tried that same cable on the other TV and it worked fine, so not a fuse problem in that respect

Has anyone else had this before? How did you fix it?

If it is a 42PD5200 , 7200 or 42PD9700 then you have a pretty terminal problem. There seems to be a 'known' issue with the power supply.
It can be fixed but we've had prices of over £350.00 for the power supply alone, plus labour. Hitachi will not give you any help so depending where you bough tit from, that may be your only route for some sort of help.
If you go to AV Forums you'll see youre not alone!

Any idea how I would check - I of course have thrown away all paperwork!

From memory, I bought it from Richer sounds, c, sep 05. Its a 42" Hitachi, HD Ready and sold to me at the time as being "top of the line" or words to that effect..

There's a thread on AVForums.

The part is relatively cheap and it's a relatively simple repair.

If its a 42PD9700 it's worth saving.

Oh, and it came with some remote controlled rotating base?

If it was the top of the range then at the time it would have been the 42PD9700. Does it swivel on its stand with the remote control?
If it is mainly black with dark silver speakers either side then its the above. If silver then its most likely one of the others.
If its on its stand just check the sticker on the back for the part number

Yeah, its the 42PD9700

WIll phone richer sounds in the morning and see what they see - will drop the whole 'fit for purpose' stuff, being under 6 years etc etc

We were quoted £350.00 for a new power supply from the Hitachi spares bods , I think in Leeds. Whats the cheap part Matt? This was for a new power supply which I know is excessive

I would imagineits most likely around 4 years old. We used to sell Hitachi until they decided to introduce a 'container load' only policy and from what I recall the last we sold were in 2006. Might be wrong though.
Plotloss will give you more info re SOG Act 1979 etc etc !

I'd have to check, its the 7200 thread on AVF.

I've got a 42PD9700 and I think it was bought in 2006 towards the end of its life.

So its 4 years old, minimum.

So you can write off 4/6ths of the cost under the SOGA for a start, if you're going to go down that route.

I definitely bought in Sep/Oct 05. £2k or so springs to mind, so on your basis ive only really got £666 of 'value' left?

Will phone richer sounds, but if its going to be £350 to maybe fix it, I may as well buy a new one..

Shame as it is such a good panel and pretty good spec for its time. Good luck!

Annoying time to replace too, as a 3D TV would be the logical next step, but not when they are so new, and expensive!

Check ebay for one with a cracked screen and take the power supply out of that smile

This happened with my Hitachi 32PD a year or so ago - was £80 to fix at a local TV repair shop. Well worth it as the xxPD range are still excellent TVs with a superb picture.

Ours is now in the bedroom since I got a G20 and still going strong.
