I have a Yamaha AV amp that has a single phono sub output. I currently run it to a Mordaunt Short Sub with two inputs (I just use the left channel). It's been fine, but is now on it's way out, so it's time to replace it (it's been making some funny noises recently so it's been switched off - I suspect either rabbit intervention or 3 year old 'fixing' is the cause)

Is there any benefit to looking for a single feed sub? I tried a 'Y' cable but the resulting sound was not good, so went back to the single one pretty quickly. The natural option would be to go for a Yamaha sub, (which incidentally are very OH friendly as they are thin and shiney) but I'd be interested in the opinions of the experts on here.

The days of very loud movies are long gone in our house so I just need something that's going to fill in the low frequencies and not blow the windows out, and consequently I haven't allocated a huge budget, say £150 give or take, but feel free to talk the budget up (or down) if you see a benefit to my system.

Oh and the other thing I noticed recently is that there is a wierd electronic 'beeping' coming through the sub when you put your head right next to it - I suspect it's my homeplug network that's causing it. It's really quiet so not really a problem, but I know it's there which is playing havoc with my OCD. Any tips on getting rid of it?

Subs are mono so almost all will be single feed.

The stereo inputs are often present because the sub has a crossover inside it and can amp high level speakers in addition.

So whatever sub you buy will be compatible.

If you're thinking of upgrading to two subs you need an input and and output on sub one.

Second hand REL T3 may stretch your budget but is the best option. No benefit for seeking a single in sub, most subs have a L R input anyway and its used for stereo sub setups but not many entry/mid AV amps have 2x sub out. Use either input.

Hiya Matt, long time no speak - the 5090 is running like a dream btw - watching Baraka on it is a practically religious experience.

Thanks for the quick reply on the sub Q. So in a nutshell there is no benefit / disadvantage to running as I have been doing with a dual input sub using only one channel (the inputs are definitely marked with an L & R on the sub I have got, which is annoying).

Any suggestions for an OK sub to do the job for me or is it a case of they are much of a muchness at my price point?

Hmm, any tips on where to look for these 2nd hand? £400 new is a bit on the pricey side, I'd never get that past the OH...
