Hi all, I don't normally frequent this forum, being a technophbe!
First of all I must point out, I know nowt about home cinema systems, although in my yoof, I was into Hi-Fi.
But looking at the zillions of systems on the market today, I have no idea what all the letters, and terminology mean.
I have a 42" Sony Bravia TV, and I'm looking for a quality home cinema system.
I know I want 4 small cube speakers, a center front speaker, a "woofer" (I already have a dog though) and a seperate amplifier. (Is this what they call Surround 5:1?)
I want something that sounds good, and I like that "theatre" rumble. wink
I may also want to upgrade the TV at a later date (The 3d jobbies coming onto the market look impressive)
I've just reformed my house, so have pre-installed cable for speakers, so not bothered about wireless speakers. I do want small and descrete though. No floor standing stuff.
I don't really have a budget, but for starters let's say £600. I could go higher, but I'm not intersted in spending thousands. Say max £1,200.
Any recomendations on stuff you own?
TIA,
Mick.

The possibilities really are endless in the price range you suggest. You will get a decent 5.1 system whatever you opt for. From your post you do not metion the need for a new DVD/Blu Ray player, so i assume you are just looking for Amp and speakers.

For AV amps, Onkyo, Denon, Sony or Pioneer do some good ones around the £300-£500 mark. For speakers of the set up you suggest (and you are correct in that what you talk about is 5.1) then the KEF KHT1005.2 or the Maudant Short Alumni are nice packages but do cost about £400. Cheaper but still worthy are the Tannoy SFX packages.

If i were you, have a browse on the Richer Sounds website to get a feel for what is out there, and read up on a few reviews. I am sure others will be along shortly with further suggestions and advice.

Happy buying!

Thanks Chums smile That'll give me something to look at for starters.
I did have a browse at some of the Kef stuff, as I still have a pair of C60's in my shed, from the 80's! Never heard of any of the other stuff, but a quick browse gives me the impression it's quality stuff.
I always did like Dennon stuff back in my yoof, and reading up on the 1610 it answered another question I had nagging away in my ludite head.....positioning of speakers? I realy want the stuff to be descrete, so I have the sockets stuck up in the corners near the ceiling, one of them over 3 meters high.
But I see the amp senses the position of the speakers, and adjusts the balance accordingly! Amaizing!
I didn't mention a DVD player, and I hate the cheap nasty thing I have now, so I'll probably leave it in the property I'm in now, and buy a new one for the place I've just done up. Would I be able to play my old DVD's on a Blu Ray player?
Thanks again for the advice.
Cheers,
Mick.

Did a bit of research on the Denon 1610, and 1910, and I see there's a couple of new models out. 1611 and 1911.
The 1610 seems like just the ticket, as I have no need of a 7+1, but I see the newer 1911 is all geared up for 3D, (but not the 1611) which I'm quite interested in for later.
Are the A-Diva and A-Diva Ti worth the extra money? and would these be a good match for the Denon 1911?
I think my budget just doubled! rolleyes

Be realistic with your requirements, I bought a Denon 1909 last year and saved myself a packet over the 1910 which didn't really offer much more.

'AV People' love to have the latest model smile

A'Divas have the bigger casing meaning they have more depth.

The Titanium driver (in both models) adds speed and accuracy.

Not got visibility on the x11 series amps as yet.

We've done a few sets on the 1910 and the higher spec Denons and they never fail to impress.

I am still happy with my 10 year old Denon AVR3300

I am holding back on the upgrades until next year as i want to see whats happening with 3d technology.

The Denon 1910 is a good amp, and will provide you with all you would want from a AV amp/processor

Smart move. I've just realised I'd have to wear those daft glasses with the new 3D TV's.
I won't be going down that route then.

Thanks for the replys all. smile
