For the first time ever I have actually bought a Blue-Ray disc, Avatar which convenienty comes with a regular DVD, so I can directly make a comparison. I only have a PS3 for Blue-Ray, not the latest state of the art player. But it was amazing the colour and detail difference when playing the same scenes. Although CGi found it quite amazing. BUT the Blue Ray is quite "jerky", is it just the PS3 causing that as it is not that good, or is it likely to be a setting / update problem as stated at the start of the disc? Bad enough that for my first viewing of the film I will watch the regular DVD version!

  • BTW this is the first time i have really watched any movies on my new Bose Acoustimass 6 speakers and Sony DA3500ES AV, awesome and absolute night and day compared to my old setup. Best £1,000 I have spent on electronic goods!

You don't say what Tv you're watching it through, but if it has 100hz/200hz, try knocking it off if you can and see if there is an improvement.

The judering is likely caused by the lack of 24 frames per second processing. Can your TV accept a 1080p24 signal? And if so does it process and display the image at a multiple of 24Hz?

If not then you'll have to live with the judering, turning off the extra processing my reduce how noticable it is though.

If you TV can accept 1080p24 and can process it correctly make sure it's enabled in the PS3's setup menus.

Cheers for that Yogi, watching Gran Torino the other day I was thinking it looked a bit juddery on my new Panny G20, so I'll give this a try.

The picture was absolutely amazing though!

Panny's have been able to handle 1080p24 for years, even my old 37PX80 can handle it and display it back without judder, and that's only a 1020x768 panel smile

1024x720 - let's not try to confuse with computer screen resolutions, whilst overlooking the loss of 4 pixels on the horizontal aspect! hehe

Aha! When I turned my Sky on this morning, 1080p came up on the screen. In contrast, the PS3 displays 480p... Think that must be the problem! Thanks. I just now need to get the TV to start up on AV4 somehow, the HDMI input, as it starts up on AV3 I think. Then I can just enjoy the new setup not get stressed about it!!!!

One for the techies... Found the PS3 menu, it says Automatic, on or off for 1080/24. Also says if you press x it shows the screen immediately in that format, if it is wrong(?) then screen goes black for 30 seconds then reverts to original. Thats what I am getting, black screen then original. I know my TV accepts 1080, the Sky seems to output at 1080, is there something glaringly obvious?

Your TV will accept a 1080p signal from blue-ray and then downscale it to your screen resolution. However, a 4yr old 32" Sony Bravia is unlikley to be able to accept a 1080p signal AT 24Hz. That's the issue.

There's no problem with using a PS3 - the blue-ray PICTURE quality is excellent and on a par with MUCH more expensive players. With more money you get more features on the player and better sound decoding.

I wouldn't discount using component (not composhite) as an alternative to HDMI. If you have the cable, you could try a like for like comparison.

Using component doesn't appear to allow 1080p/24, on my PS3 that option only applies to bluray disks watched over HDMI.

Hence I'm going to have to switch to HDMI and see if it's better.

My Sony 46W2000 doesn't support 1080/24, your 32" won't either
