Humax Freesat Problems

I hooked up the above to my system last night to watch the Footy in HD which we did.
The problem is the audio on non HD channels (eg most of them), BBC HD = Fine, ITV DH = Fine.
Any SD channel = no audio (or at least that was my initial impression)
What actually appears to be the problem is that the volume is very low on SD. On HD with the Humax on midpoint volume the amp (Denon 1910) on -20db volume is plenty loud enough. Switch to SD and you need to crank up the Humax volume to Max and the Denon to +20db (max) to get something you can hear and even then it's not as loud as my normal volume.
It gets weirder though. If I switch from HD to SD via the program guide the volume remains reasonable (not as loud as on HD) but you don't have to max out the amp and Humax to hear.
Connection is via HDMI, I've tried using the red/white leads but it made no difference, I'll try optical later tonight.
Anyone had a similar problem, or am I missing something obvious? I've googled and similar problems come up but no solutions worked. Wanted to check here before raising with Humax.

I use the optical output form the Humax Freesat box. Before that only HD channels had that happening to them, so when going to HD from SD I suddenly got a rise in sound. Since whatever update happened around 2/3 months ago this now means they are the same volume to the amp and the volume on the Humax makes no difference.
This is also the case when viewing BBC iPlayer through the Freesat box too (For those that didn't know they had this, plug in a network cable in the back and then on BBC One press the red button. On the page select type 5483 (spells LIVE in letters), press enter and viola BBC iPlayer)
