I'm in the market for a new TV and the current Panny G10/20s seem to be the universal choice in and around £1k. How do they compare to the now discontinued Pioneer plasmas of the last few years? Would you consider a second-hand Pioneer Plasma at a few hundred less than a brand new Panny? Does the fact that the Pioneer is a few years old, has obviously been used and I presume without a warranty negate any overall benefit from have a superior telly? How much cheaper would a second-hand Pioneer have to be over a new Panny for you to consider it?

Thoughts/opinions gratefully received as ever smile

The upcoming higher end Panasonics use the Kuro engine from the Pioneers.

Best of both worlds.

cat amongst pigeons.....

What sort of price will the new Pannys be retailing at though?

Any opinions on purchasing a second-hand Pioneer (obviously some may have to remove their retailing hat first to answer this though hehe) over a newer Panny or do the sums still not add up?

I would go for a new G20 (with full Panasonic 5 yr warranty, etc.) over an older Pioneer, UNLESS you can pick up a 9th Gen 'KURO' Pioneer, with warranty remaining, for a good price. However, these 9th Gen Pios are holding their value very well and I doubt you'd find a (good) cheap one.

I recently sold my mint, (year old) 50" Pioneer KRP500A (top of the range 9th Gen) for £2,250!

I wouldn't recommend a 7th or 8th Gen Pioneer over a new G20. Black levels will be very close if not better in the Panny and there's the peace of mind of the warranty.

The 9th Gen Kuro's still seem to be holding firm money, so it would be a 7th/8th gen that I'd probably be considering.

Then definitely go for a new Panny plasma! smile

I have just started a new thread RE: 9th Gen Pioneer and waiting for a new Kuro Panny. Why did you sell the KRP500A out of interest? Any idea on when and how much the Kuro Panny will be?

The new Pannys with KURO tech are the V20 and VT20 (3D enabled). Probably going to be released in May/June this year at about £1,600 and £1,900 respectively for the 50" screens. I'd plump for the VT as even if you don't end up watching 3D content, you'll still benefit from the faster phophers that Panny have developed for 3D. VT20 won't be produced as a 42" though.

I sold my KRP500A as I was downgrading my whole AV setup prior to moving to a flat and am waiting to see reviews of the VT20 when it comes out. Currently have a cheap and cheerful Panny 50X10 as a stopgap - surprisingly good colours and fleshtones!!

There's loads of info and discussion on Avforums.com (a very good UK-based website)

Thanks... sounds like a couple of months wait for a VT20 is going to be a better bet than spending nearly £2K on a second hand 5090 without warranty then....

The 436 will be fine till June smile

I appreciate it is right now, but will it be in 3 months time when the VT20 is released. That is the burning question.

But will that be best 6 months after that? Something better is always just around the corner, you'd never buy anything with that kind of reasoning.

Yes, but the issue is - because the Pioneers are short supply, their used prices are going to about the same as they were new a year ago... so for a telly with no warranty and already over a year old now - or a 3 month wait for a new TV at similar money with hopefully even better technology.....

Exactamundo!! smile

Pioneer plasmas are in short supply because they pulled out of the plasma market completely in the middle of last year and sold their 'black-arts' KURO technology to Panasonic (plus took on some Pioneer engineers).

So the future's bright - and it's BLACK!! Inky black! smile

Only a smidge though Matt. Based on current cost around £2100.00

V approx £300.00 cheaper

What do you think will be the take up for the 3D services? Do you really see a huge demand?

Not sure.

There will be a honeymoon period I guess.

Largely depends on the content provision in the early days.

Could be LaserDisc Mk2

Tend to agree...I expect some sandal and cardie types might be tempted. Will be interesting to see how much Panasonic charge for extra glasses! Understand only one pair is supplied with each telly so handy for family viewing
