Hmm, so I've collapsed in front of the telly to watch Wales-France in HD, and it appears my Panasonic 42" HD TV has a line of broken pixles down one side - I bought it just over a year ago from DeR - am I covered by the warranty, or am I stuffed?

(No comment on DeR by the way, he was a fantastic help, but it seems even Panny can make expensive products that blow up just out of warranty)

All you can do it put it in for repair, if they quote you a massive bill then start shouting at Panasonic, if its a reasonable bill then you will have to pay it.

Write to Panasonic directly, or DeR's company. Your contract is with DeR afterall...

Thought DigitalDirect did a free 3 year warranty on all their screens. Or was that not in place a year ago?

I had a pretty expensive top of the range Panny microwave die at 16mths old and they couldn't give a toss. Made the mistake of buying it from Makro which is a trade place so Sale of Goods act for consumers can't be applied.

I've got a Panasonic Plasma and it really galls me to pay for the extended warranty but I did it on that just to save the hassle / heartache if it goes wrong.

That's only the rest of Europe I believe, we haven't adopted that. It's all very confusing, but reading the sales of goods act, we technically only get a six month g'tee!!!

The EU thing was never implemented in the UK.

Standard warranty on Panasonic products is a year.

However, there have been a lot of promotions with warranties being offered. Can you remember if yours was purchased when one of these offers was on?

I guess its just a bit galling <sp> when I pay £40+ on home insurance and warranties on electrical items that have yet to break, yet the one thing I don't buy a warranty for decides to get all spazzy on me :$

Maybe the moral of the story is to put that cash in to a slush fund instead?

Absolutely. You'll either got warranty everything or nothing.

But try Der and see what he says. You do have a legal right to expect a reasonable lifetime out of the product and no-one would think 13mths is enough.

The law states 12 months, that dosent mean 13 months it means 12 months, so if it goes after then its at the descretion of the retailer.
Electrical things go faulty fact. They do not have time devices in them to make them go faulty just after the warantee expires. Its just a luck thing there is no big conspiracy.....or is there wink

It most certainly does not, and anyway, in law, the guarantee or warranty is irrelevant because it is "in addition to your statutory rights".

Beat the out-of-guarantee blues

Anyway, I'm sure Der would sort it out, but this kind of thing shows why it might not be a good idea to buy stuff from people that you know.

Actually, there is more to it than just "it's only 12 months, it's the law."

All goods sold must be of "reasonable quality" and the durability of a product is included in that. Just because something fails 366 days after purchase, doesn't mean anything, the product should still work for the length of time it would be expected to do so.

Unfortunately it isn't black and white as to how long a TV should last, but I think it would be difficult to argue that 13 months is an acceptable lifespan.

None of this is any reflection on DeR and I'm sure he'll do the right thing.

I think everyone is by now aware of the SOGA etc.

Thus it's best left for Bing o and Der to communicate directly. I don't think any more speculation brings anything to the table.
