In the very near future I'm going to need something new to hook my ps3 up to. In an effort to avoid the TV License payment, I'm considering a monitor rather than a TV (I don't much care for Live TV anyway).

To add to this, I'm considering a 'media center' laptop or system to download/stream TV from the web, which I would like to be HD too.

So my questions are:

What sort of budget am I looking at to get a good monitor (size 24"+ if possible)?

Which monitor would you recommend for this purpose?

Which system would you recommend for solely downloading/streaming HD TV?

Oh, and if it all looks stylish that would be a bonus!

Use of a Monitor rather than a TV makes no difference for a "TV" licence, you now only need a tv licence to watch or record live broadcast, you do not need a licence for using a TV for other purposes.

Edit: and as such you will need a licence to stream live feeds from BBC with a monitor, pc etc.., they are tech savvy and will submit your postcode to the same process no matter what is/isnt on the wall.

But only you will know whether you require one, legally and/or morally.

If the TV police bust down your door (really not very likely) their only angle is if the TV is "capable" of receiving broadcasts, ie plugged into an aerial or active TV decoder (sat/cable). They will, however, constantly harass you with threatening letters.

Although TV licence is required for online live BBC viewing I've never heard of anyone being done for it, that would require co-operation of your ISP, or that you can be done for having a PC "capable" of receiving broadcasts, because that'd include every PC on the 'net.

Thanks for the replies so far. To clarify a bit further - The main reason for my question is that I am under the impression that monitors are cheaper than equivalent quality TVs. Is this the case? Also, I'd prefer to completely remove the temptation of watching mind numbing TV. I'm not looking to 'not-pay-but-still watch'. I'll be happy with iPlayer, DVDs, etc.
