Right....

I want to mount my tv to a wall, thats the easy part, the bit which is confusing me is what cables do i need to fit into the wall and where is the most sensible place to locate things like the sky box, dvd player etc.

So firstly i dont have sky- i will likely get it with HD so what cables do i need? and do they come in extended lenghts
audio system/dvd player - straight forward that one, no problem.

Am i able to get extended power cables for my devices? As its likely the plug sockets are far away and either way i want everything hidden so if they are close they are getting moved.

Now

do i mount one of those under the tv shelf type systems or hide everything in a cabinet somewhere discreet ( only problem i can see is having to point the remote in a strange location).

Anything else i should consider fitting? As the wall is going to have some rather nice wallpaper and i dont want to be ripping it up when i realise i forgot something.

Thanks smile

Hello M3jappa, if you have enough money left over from your floors ( wink ) you could buy the new panny tv that is wireless, all you would need then is a power point for the TV and you could locate the equipment anywhere you wish!
However, basing the fact you probaly dont have 4k handy for a new TV, it all depends on your set up and how you use it, if you have an amp and dont mind turning it on everytime you watch TV then just 1 HDMI cable to your TV should do the trick, connected to your amp with all other devices inputting into your amp.
This is how I run mine (not HDMI as the distance to my TV is too large and I refused to pay hundreds for a HDMI cable so used component at the mo and waiting for the said TV to go down in price as surley the future is wireless??!!) I think alot depends on how you use your system.

Does your TV have a seperate media box (gives you far more options) or do all the cables plug into the TV itself?

My TV has a seperate media box which I have in the cipboard under the stairs with the Sky HD, DVD, PS3 and Audio equipment. The only cables I then have to the TV are the 2 signal cables from the media box to the screen and are run under the floor and are chased into the wall.

If you cables plug into your screen, then you are going to need some longer runs of HDMI/component and Optical / Coax or however you connect. It all depends on your room layout and space considerations as to where you house it all but longer cable lengths will mount in cost so factor this in.

Don't worry about where you point the remote as you can get something like a power mid repeater to relay the signal. I use this from living room to under the stairs.

How about connecting a suitable cable to every connection on the TV?

Thanks guys for the input smile

Unfortunately i don't have a lot of money, especially 4k for a new tv frown

I currently have a panasonic 42" plasma (cant remember the number maybe tx85b ? )
Harmon kardon dvd/home cinema kit thing
No sky
No ps3 or the like

What cables does sky hd require? is it only power lead and a hdmi cable?

But i will likely get sky hd and maybe a ps3 is i ever feel the need for the bluray at least.

I plan/planned to wall mount the screen and then get a set of floating shelves under the screen- however a spanner has been thrown in the works as most shelves seem to be around 350mm deep and the harman kardon is 410mm deep so i need to look into what to do there.

These media box things sound good, does anyone have a link to something i could use? dop you have to buy the whole TV?

I,m not overly fussed at having the best of the best but i just want it to look neat and smart with no visible cables and have the option to upgrade things. It wouldnt be that much hassle but the wall i,m mounting the tv on is a feature wall with some nice flock wallpaper and i dont want to be doing it again in the nearish future.

Will these cables work with a replacement TV if this one fails or needs replacing? or will you pull the wall apart again?

To the OP, decide where you want the SKY, DVD etc to go and make sure you have sufficient power there and 2 feeds from the sky dish. Then bury the biggest piece of plastic conduit you can in the wall before you decorate, run it from the location of the boxes to somewhere behind the TV. Bear in mind fixings for the bracket. Ideally put a single soklet behind the TV.

Run whatever HDMi etc through the conduit, and leave something in there to use as a draw for anything else you need to run for this TV, or any new one you might get in the future.

Personally, I'd get at least two HDMI cables (try ukhdmi.com) of a sufficient length (maybe a little longer than you need). Then stick a long SCART lead in there... finally consider a component cable as well, SCART and Component being, 'just in case'.

Consider whether you need a stereo phono cable as well.

Large trunking to pull replacement cables through if necessary, I don't intend to be replastering.

I have a floating shelf type unit.
All the various wires and interconnects are hidden inside including mains sockets.
It's only 50mm deep so it's a little fiddly securing everything inside.
My amp is a bit larger than the shelf but it's no problem
