Hope someone can cast some light on this as its a weird one...

My old man has had his (standard, bottom of the range) Sky box (and original) remote hooked up to an old style Sony telly since 1999 without any issues. He recently treated himself and today his new flatscreen Sony Bravia arrived which I hooked up for him. Digital freeview works without fault, however when he uses the Sky remote, the TV picks up some of the fequencies of the buttons.

Now I know that the Sky remote can be used to control the TV to some extent but this is different. The TV guide, the box office, interactive and services buttons are all registering with the telly as '5'. So with Sky displayed on the screen (through the AV1 input) the pressing of the TV Guide switches the telly back to freeview, channel 005. Pressing the SKY button first doesn't help either.

I phoned the technical line for him and a helpful girl talked me through reprogramming the handset (first select+blue, then when that didn't work, select+yellow, then 1 if that means anything to anyone?). This should apparently have changed the frequencies the hand set was using but it made absolutely no difference even though the flashing red light on the remote behaved as it should during the operation.

So after a few minutes on hold, she told me the handset was faulty and I should buy a new one. Yeah, right. It worked for ten years then broke the day the new telly was delivered? Also, if the Sky box is pushed back under the table and the remote is close enough and shielded so that the telly can't 'see' the signal, then everything works as it should. But it's not very realistic to expect my dad to get down on his knees every time he changes the channel. frown

I was hoping someone may have heard of something similar? I don't even have Sky so I'm a bit lost to be honest. Only thing I can figure is that the telly is dodgy - why would four buttons on the remote (I presume with different frequencies) all illicit the same response from the TV?

Over to you guys...

There is a macro programmed into that handset, they did this so the TV would switch to channel 5 whenever the SKY button or any of the menu buttons were pressed, all you need to do is undo the macro as follows,

To delete the macro press tv and then hold select and green together for around two seconds (until the red light blinks twice). Then press select again (red light blinks twice).

Another way is to take out the batteries and leave out for a while, that sometimes does the job also.

What the sky person was telling you todo was the sequence to make a standard sky remote work a sky+ box... dingbats!
