Telly numpty with some cash
Discussion
Got some money coming in so thought i'd treat me and the mrs to a new to replace my ancient Bush tv. Now theres a couple of guys at work who think they know what they are talking about and they say go for a samsung 40 inch. I've a budget of £500 and have quite a large living room just under 5meters from tv to sofa. It will be used for tv dvd and wii not got blueray or HD but may go for HD in the future. And i want to be able to go buy it from somewhere idealy this weeknd not wait for it to be delivered unless its a much better deal that way

im not tempted by any make rather not have some unknown cheapo tho so any other suggestions are welcome
What do you tend to watch? Lots of sport or just general viewing? We have a viewing distance of around 3m and went for the LG 50PS3000 at £650 from Richer Sounds.
The feeds are Blu-Ray, MediaPC and Virgin V+ (which also upscales SD slightly). We do notice the poorer quality channels but most are ok and the HD channels are very good.
I didn't like the Samsungs when I saw them in the shop (not sure if it was all the discussions on here that put me off but the picture looked artificial - too bright etc).
I went for the LG as a Pansonic of a similar size was an extra £300 and we are more than pleased with it.
I'd suggest having a chat with Der (i've spent a lot of money with him in the past).
My humble opinion is this

its a mixture really not to much sport tho. one question i've wondered is it woth going for 1080p full HD there doesnt seam a big price differance and a 1080p will be more future proof and better if i got a HD box?
As I understand it to get the full HD "experience" you need as large as screen as possible. Our viewing distance is 3m and we can appreciate the difference between our new 50" 1080p screen and our old 32" 1080i screen.
If i'm not mistaken the Virgin V+ that we have upscales SD signals as much as possible and the LG Blu-Ray player upscales SD DVDs as well.
The "HD" channels on both Virgin and Sky are broadcast in 1080i but Sky doesn't upscale it's non HD channels.
