Which 40-42" telly for 5-700 quid?
Discussion
Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice. Any traders on here more than welcome to pm me too. Have a 5-700 quid budget for a telly in and around 40-42". Important things for me to consider - living room in new place is stupidly bright, like the scene where jim carey meets morgan freeman in bruce almighty. Usage will be Sky HD where poss, probably more in the way of SD at the moment, the odd blue ray, dvds here and there. Having seen loads of flatscreens running standard sky, am well aware of how cr@ppy SD can look on them, so would be keen on a screen that's good at scaling it up. Also watched a horrifically jerky movie on a screen in currys that was meant to be showing off the benefits of hdmi, so i guess avoiding that would be kind of nice! Honestly I'm tempted to keep my end of the line CRT until more TV is HD, but it's so frigin heavy it's staying exactly where it is...
Or to put it another way, perhaps, what's the MX5 of telivision?!
Anyhow, thoughts, suggestions, sales pitches gratefully received!

Cheers, it's on my potentials list, but aren't plasmas meant to be better in low light due to lack of backlight? Or is that less of an issue than people say. Brief feedback ive got from sales guys is that lcd is better due to backlight, but contrast and upscaling of SD isn't as good, so i shd go to LED instead. Which happens to be the most expensive option...

I don't think you'll have a problem with the light room and a plasma, I seem to remember that they do often benefit from a bit of backlighting, but I'm sure someone who knows a bit more about these things will be along soon.
"Currys... we can help". OP, plasmas have a glass front: though anti-reflection technology has got much better recently, there is still quite a lot of reflection when there is lots of bright light.
LCD screens don't suffer from this.

LCD is not better: plasmas are always ging to give a better picture;- faster response times
- better blacks
- can naturally produce more colours, making it look more true to life.
Don't bother with LED: it is fairly expensive for what it is in all honesty.

No they dont, usually a plastic anti glare screen, non of them are glass. In a shop enviroment then there is generally lots of reflective light, get the thing home and most of this is gone, the only times it can be an issue is if you sit with a window behind you with the screen mounted opposite, or with you sat for example to the right of the screen with a window to the same angle but to the left of the screen.OP, plasmas have a glass front: though anti-reflection technology has got much better recently, there is still quite a lot of reflection when there is lots of bright light.

Yes they do, especially the LED type. Lots of LCD's now dont have a matt finish to the screen but a Gloss one. Put any TV in a bright light and it will wash out and reflect the stronger ambient light, plasma will give the best performance in this area.Just think about where you are going to put it, the usual place in the corner under the window will give you little to no problems, just be aware about any bright light sources if you wall mount it.

I have bought plenty of kit from them and have only ever found one item cheaper else where. (it was a very very expensive Wharfdale valve amp!) As for which TV, i would consult the online "which" guides.
- i have just had a look and they have a cracking 48" for 699 1080dpi and all the trimmings..... good luck!

Use Richer Sounds for price matching, then buy it from John Lewis. Seriously.
John Lewis refused to price match a TV with Richer Sounds for me a couple of years ago, even though RC had the TV on display and in stock. I tried twice with JL in Kingston on this issue but they refused simply stating that "my information was at fault". They clearly never went to the Richer Sounds store within walking distance. I even phoned them from outside the RC store indicating that the TV was on display and that I had 1st refusal on their last one in stock. With the RC five year warranty, the TV was still around £500 less than at JL.Another example is the Panasonic Plasma G10. £1199 in JL with 5 year guarantee but only £980 in RC with 5 year guarantee. JL will say "it's not the same guarantee" so won't price match. Complete con.
I've never bought a single item from JL again. Spent several £1000s elsewhere since then. Terribly arrogant company and very often undersold.
