Forgive me if this doesn't quite make sense - but I will try!

My sister has a Samsung TV, a Sky+ box, and a recently bought surround sound system.

The TV is connected to the surround sound system with a SCART lead, and a HDMI cable (these might be overkill - just one of these needed?).
The Sky+ is connected to the TV with a SCART lead.

She can watch DVDs in surround sound, but no matter what setting she tries she cannot watch Sky in surround sound - is there something missing from the set up?

Yes, (best get confirmation on the connector type for the SKY+ box though as I don't have one myself).

By the way, the gold thing is a complete joke for optical cables.

Yup, just as Plotloss said, connect a HDMI from the surround sound to the TV and get rid of the scart (its doing nothing anyways), then connect an optical cable (like the one you linked to) from the sky box to the surround sound.
In the sky sound menu switch it from STEREO to Dolby D.

To listen to sky via the surround sound press the Ext In button repetedly until the front display shows D In.

Some programs are transmitted in Dolby D (this will be picked up automatically), for the ones that are not then select Dolby ProLogicII then this will decode any matrix sound system transmitted to you.

Sky+ will be scart not HDMI so you will need the optical in addition:

Sky+ --> SCART --> TV
Sky+ --> OPITCAL --> Surround Sound
Surround Sound --> HDMI --> TV

I picked up one of these recently to connect my DVD player to the LCD in the bedroom and it works perfectly.

Just to update this - still can't get it to work!
Tv - HDMI - surround sound
TV - Scart - surround sound
TV - Scart - Sky + box
Sky+ - optical cable - surround sound

With the surround sound on digital input, it receives no audio and there is no visual on the TV?

Any ideas or assistance of where I have gone wrong would be great!

There is a little overkill with the leads there m8, you dont really need the scart form the surround sound to the TV if you have the HDMI

SKY - TV > SCART lead (Ext1 on the TV)

SKY - Surround Sound > Optical lead (D in)

Surround Sound - TV > HDMI lead (HDMI 1 on the TV)

To operate it you will need to do the following:

To watch SKY with the sound coming from your Cin kit, Select EXt1 on the TV, Select 'D in' on the Cin kit

To Watch a DVD, select HDMI1 on the TV, Select DVD on the cin kit

You should really be hearing sound from the sky box even with the TV switched off, check the optical is in correctly (pull it out at the cin kit end and make sure it is lit up red)

This is true, make sure there is a definitive 'click' to ensure its snugly in place, as I've heard of some people just putting it in loosely (so to speak) and therefore no contact made.
