Just bought a 40" samsung 1080 tv to replace my 37" 720 samsung and if I am honest there is no difference in the picture quality. I have Sky plus and a ps3 which I tried a blue ray film through and compared with the picture in the shop i thought mine was no where near as crisp. I have checked the cables and have a good cable from my sky box to the tv. My brother has the same tv and his picture is mint on comparison

so has any one got any ideas before my bottom lip starts to quiver any further.

Where did you get it from, that 1080 thing is no benefit unless TV is over 50" (waits to be corrected)

Do sky show 1080, I thought it was just 740.

Likewise on a ps3 are you watching something that is 1080 or just 740?

There are two possible reasons for your plight.

Firstly Samdung, secondly a 1080 resolution is only applicable, in the vast majority of cases, on a front projection setup.

Whats the Model no of the TV?
Is it just SKY+ or SKY+HD? and what lead are you using HDMI/SCART
Is the PS3 connected with a HDMI lead?

Size has no baring on 1080p, 1080p is only available via blu ray or game consul if the thing being played is true 1080p

Sky broadcast on 720p/1080i.

The bandwith needed for sky to use 1080p is huge so will probably never happen

TV's with 1080 full hd are a great selling gimick if you only intend to use sky & sky hd at that save some money and buy a non 1080 tv.

With your sky box, make sure the scart that goes to the TV is in the socket actually marked TV (usually the bottom one) then in the sky picture menu select RGB and not composite, there should be a marked change in picture quality as you toggle this option, if it dont change then there is a problem with your scart connection.
For the PS3 make sure the output resolution is set to 1080p (it will have proberbly doe this automatically), you can then try dropping it to 1080i then 720 to see what difference it makes if any.

Thats about all you can do setup wise for what you have.

It does if your eye is not sensitive enough to be able to see the extra pixles on a smaller screen.

This may shock some people but:

1080i is actually a lot worse than 720p. This is because 720p is progressive and therefore better than 1080 (particularly for high movement stuff like sports). People seem to think the bigger number is always better. And yes, apparently you do need to go over 50 inch to see the benefit. You're supposed to sit 3x the TV screen size away from any TV to get the best from it, so with the 50in you need to be sitting twelve and a half feet away. Is your living room bigger than 12 and a half feet?

1080i is of course better, but the only thing capable of producing that resolution at the moment is the PS3 or a Blu-Ray player (not sure on the Xbox 360).

Sky transmit in 720p because its better than 1080i and 1080p is too high a bandwidth to send over a normal digital TV transmission.

It will happen, but not on current transmission equipment. TV stations need to upgrade to 3gbps equipment, which is very expensive. The company I work for sells it.

Only on very very very fast motion scenes 720p has the edge and even then the difference is only tiny.

There is essentially no discernable difference between 1080i and 720p
