All,

Not entirely hi-fi I guess, but I need some recommendations for a decent pair of headphones. Primarily to be used with my MP3 player, so need to be reasonably light and not too cumbersome. Budget of £50 or so?

I'd be quite interested in what people say here too.

Does anyone have any experience of Sennheiser HD 238

Or Grado SR60i

v-Jays are good, not really "proper" cans though, but "on-ears" type.

I just want ones that I don't have to wedge in my ears!

The only other problem is that I've got to buy them from John Lewis (vouchers).

I`d be surprised if JL wouldnt let you try out any likely candidates for yourself? I got some Denon innerear jobbies for xmas, they were about £50 and are nicely built, and sound noticably better than the sennheisers I had before (which started falling apart after a year or so..)

The Denon ones at JL (AH-D301) seem to get ropey reviews on Amazon, the Sony ones seem ok though (Sony MDR-V500 DJ)

I bought the HD202's recently from amazon, arrived yesterday. I find them a touch small but I probably do have big ears, still comfortable though. Sound doesn't leak out so they're great for the office and at home I can barely hear the missus even without music playing which is a bonus. The sound quality isn't too bad, fantastic really at the bargain basement price I paid, so I'd imagine if the 238's are twice the price they'll be a very reasonable pair of headphones.

Had some SR125s for years now, sound great, so a '+1' from me.

And you reply was? I found it funny IMHO biggrin

I have a 2nd hand pair of Bose NC headphones I got off eBay. Not sure how they stack up versus the competition especially the price new. But they do sound very good IMO.

So your two posts have helped the OP in what way exactly?

I bought a pair of Bose triport around ear headphones for £120 around 7 years ago, they were fantastic - heard things I had never heard on CDs before. They were also extremely long lasting. They have just about fallen apart now, after many years of abuse, and I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser HD228s to replace them with.

The sound quality is excellent, not quite as full range as the BOSE at the lowest or highest volumes, but for the money they are great. If you are commuting/listening anywhere near people, I'd advise you go for the 228s as the 238s are open - so people will be able to hear your music, and you'll be able to hear them!
