I'm pretty clueless on this but hope to end up with something decent.

I've had an all-in-one surround sound/ DVD player for a good few years now, but the DVD playing function has broken so it's time to move on. I'm guessing that what ever I buy will properly sound better, so I won't be at a loss.

I've always wanted a separate amp and speakers but at the time money wouldn't allow for this. I'm now hoping it does on the lower end of the scale. Looking around I took a fancy to the ONKYO TX SR607 amp and a 5.1 speaker package similar to the Onkyo SKSHT528.

This will deliver me my 5.1 setup.
From my rookie view, the amp seems good enough to hold out for years to come, while the speakers will do the job, I can always upgrade them in years to come with the amp still doing its job well.

Looking into it further and gathering rough costs for this, I've stumbled upon the Onkyo TX-SR577, Richer sounds state "If you like the processing power of the Onkyo TXSR607 but don't need its power or connectivity, then the Onkyo TXSR577 could be the perfect AV receiver for you."

It got me thinking, maybe I don't need the 607 and could save a few £££'s here, but would I miss the extra oomph and connectivity in years to come?

Currently I have a Wii, PS2, Blu Ray player, Squeezebox to pop into the back of the amp.

As it stands, only the Blu Ray player outputs in HD, but the next generation of my consoles will output in HD, so I need to leave room for them. ~3 HD inputs minimum I would hazard a guess at for it to last me through the years.

Enlighten me to where I could save a few £££'s and should maybe spend a few £££'s. I'm looking new at the moment as I wouldn't know what to look for second hand. I'm happy to snap up a bargain either hand it be, maybe the speakers would have more bang for my buck second hand?

My Blu Ray and LCD came from them and I will be going back to them, just want more of an idea to what I want and the budget before turning up on their door.

Have been doing a lot of reading on AV forums and the like as I'm on the look out for a similar(ish) system.
This has had a hell of a lot of good reviews and recommendations...
Onkyo HTX-22HD

That'll take your connections for optical audio in and HDMI in.
The amplifier, sub etc. are all combined into one unit.
It can be had with 5 speakers as well, see this review.smile

I'm trying to decide between this and a unit with a BR player built-in, myself at the moment!

But if the amp were to break, I would then need to by a new amp and a new sub? Same for if the sub broke, would I need to buy a new amp and sub again?

Seems that if I wanted upgrade the system I'd have to basicly replace it all!?

^^ True, but it does both jobs (admittedly not quite as well, but as well as most people would need!) for a good price!

I can just see it costing me in the end. A mistake I'd hate for ever more. I'm trying to stop costs spiralling out of control. As is so easy when looking at these things.

I would go for the ONKYO TXSR607 just for the extra outputs rather than the slight increase in power although it comes in handy

I have the older 606 and have always been impressed with it

You might want to see if you can buy an extra couple of the satellite speakers as both amps are 7.1 ,I made the mistake of buying a Tannoy 5.1 speaker set up only to be told I couldn't just buy two more frown

The main difference that will decide it for you, is that the 607 will up-convert composite (Wii and PS2) to hdmi and send everything through one hdmi cable to your tv. If you get the 577, you will need to connect a composite cable from the amp to the tv too. What's the price difference? £50? You will need more cables with 577, so that will bring it closer to the same price anyway.

Dalos, thanks for the simple terms. Less cables going up would be a bonus....hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Edited to add. Any 607 alternatives? Or is this a gooden for the price range?

Also, I've a 26" 720 TV. Will the receiver output 1080 and downscale it for the TV, so all is fine?
