We have a viewing distance of about 7 feet and use an old tube tv 32inch. Would like to get a Panny G15 46 inch.

Whats the corrilation to screen size and viewing distance? Is a 46inch too big for 7 feet with standard sky tv? (We aim to have freesat as well)

I was once told that the optimum viewing distance is 4 x TV size.

bit out of date now, as everyone with a big telly would be 15-20 feet away LOL wink

I think that applied to older, low res CRT Tvs........

I've got exactly the same TV. Just sat 7' from it and yes, you'll be ok. Certainly no less than that for normal viewing, HD even less than 7'. You wont be disappointed with the TV that's for sure!

Judging from our 42" G10 which replaced a CRT last month, SD Freeview / Sky etc will probably look a bit soft from 7ft away coming from a smaller CRT, so if you mainly watch SD material I'd suggest getting a demo before you buy to make sure that doesn't annoy you because I think it would me. We sit about 11ft from ours and that's absolutely fine, for HD material we can always move the sofa closer and by the time terrestrial TV goes completely HD I suspect we'll be ready to get a new telly anyway.

Will definitely look softer coming from a 32"CRT (i had the same) to a 46" plasma, but you soon get used/adjust to it. Also bear in mind its a big ol telly, but still watchable at 7'. I'd say if you were moving in the near future (poss bigger room?) go with the 46, if you intend staying for a considerable time give the 42 a more serious thought. Hope that makes sensesmile

Not the same size, but a good discussion here.

I just bought a p46g10 for my rear lounge which is 16 foot in length. The panny is placed in the corner of the room, I would say that the distance is perfect in relation to the size of the tv.

SD Sat and DVD player btw.

50" Plasma here with a viewing distance of 3 metres.

Blu-Ray is stunning and HD very good (via Virgin V+), certain channels can look a bit crap depending on what bandwidth the channel has.
