Come on then chaps, tell us what you think of the average TV salesperson at Currys?

I also want to clear up a few things;

- we are not on commission per se, more of a bonus scheme whereby you get x% of what margin you make the company.

- we are not told to sell model "x" or model "y" because we have lots in stock etc. We are there to advise customers on what contrast ratio, refresh rate, and so on is.

- we do not set up or calibrate TVs to make them look either good or bad. They are unboxed, turned on and auto tuned (or run through a HD signal in refurbished stores).

- yes, our HDMI cables are a rip off. biggrin The SCART leads we sell, however, are pretty damn good.

Overall, I think it is a good company. The stock is usually available to take home, we do give good advice and customer service (of course, always exceptions...!) and most of the store colleagues are knowledgable.

I have tried many times to buy from Currys, in fact over a period of two years I have purchased £3500 of electrical goods inc TV's and a laptop from Comet because I have never found anyone either interested in selling to me or more interested in selling warrenties/aftercare products. Totally useless sales people IMO.

If my experience is typical (and from reading here it seems to be so) then the average Curry's salesperson ranges from quite decent (usually students on their holidays) to completely atrocious. The completely atrocious bullsh*t merchants do seem to be the norm though.

no idea. not been in one of your stores for about 13 years, after being so incensed at the appalling after sales attitude shown to repairing (or not) my warranted personal cassette player. Someone I know claims to have worked for you and reckons all you do is stick warranty-repair items on the shelf for 6 weeks then hand them back; preposterous as this sounds it explains my experience fairly well.

In the end I did convince one of your monkeys to give me a brand-new player, which by this point I no longer needed as it'd been so long I now had a car- (gave it to a mate)- but just did it out of principle, and have done my best since to make sure as few people as possible use any dixons group company.

I usually have a look at your showrooms and then buy online.

I don't even bother looking in the shop and then buying on line, things like TVs seem so badly setup that I find it off putting (I remember seeing my own TV on display in Currys after I'd bought it and it looked nothing like the one I had at home). I tend to go into John Lewis to see TVs or things I want to touch/look at before buying and sometimes they'll pricematch anyway so they get my business rather than one of the 'sheds'. For more 'serious' AV gear (projectors, amps, speakers, etc) I go to a good local dealer who will let me bring equipment home (against a credit card deposit for security) to demo properly.

I'll buy printer cartridges in there if I'm desparate, but only because it would be for work and I'll be claiming it back as it's their printer. smile

"Sap" the "knowledge" of someone who works for Currys?

That's a laugh. I'm sure there is one or two people in the whole organisation who know stuff, but I've certainly never met them. I heard so much crap in my life on the last few occasions that I visited the local store that I'm still clearing my ears even though I already have enough to fertilise 10 acres.

It wasn't just wrong, it was wilfully misleading. Fortunately I know enough to ignore it, but many don't and that is what I despise.

I am fairly certain I know a great deal more about technology than you. No need to stereotype every colleage as being dumb, etc.

It is fairly rude, is a huge generalisation and un-necessary.

Explain?

Unless you're a classic customer who comes in for an argument, having read a nugget of info on AV Forums or whatever, and thinks he knows it all, only to be 'pwned' by someone who knows more than him.

The classic "Sky+HD is broadcast in 1080p" brigade.

Edit - picking someone up for having a lack of knowledge when they cannot master the verb "to be". It is "are one or two people" - not "is one or two people". That cannot even be a typo, just a fundamental lack of grammar.

I'm sorry but i've never found anybody in Currys / Comet who knows much about tech. I'm 99.99% confident I'd know more than they would.

I'd never go in and ask for advice and some of the things I've over heard in those places for the salespeople shocks me!

Nope, I've never gone into any store looking for a fight. Purely for information. I've had Currys staff members talk utter gibberish about what's right and wrong, not know how to connect things, one chap spent 5 minutes trying to convince me that there was no such thing as an HDMI input for ANY home cinema system and why would I wouldn't want it anyway... I had been talking to another member of staff who seemed to be fairly knowledgable, when this muppet (her manager) came over and started blathering all of this guff. She stood there cringing like crazy as she knew already from our previous discussion that I knew a bit about it. He walked off and she apologised to me.

Another had not a clue when I asked about the WEEE directive.

Even buying a fridge left me dumbfounded and open mouthed. I'd done 30 minutes research on the internet and knew more than the bloke trying to convince me that one was better than another, despite countless reviews saying the opposite and the fact that the slightly more expensive one seemed to be made out of soggy cardboard and has design faults that defied belief.

I learnt not to bother with any of the chain electrical stores now, or to simply use them to have a look at something I will buy elsewhere. I have nothing against big shops, but the atrocious service that I have recieved in them over the years means that I won't buy anything from them in the future.

I'd rather spend more and buy from people who give a monkeys about their products and their customers. Strangely enough, I've just bought a telly from Der for that exact reason. The fact that I got a great price from him was great, but not essential.

It's like Ryanair. You might be flying for less, but you feel grubby and cheap afterwards and it just isn't worth it.

Many years ago when DVD players were pretty new and pricey I did my research and then went into Currys and asked about two DVD players I couldn't decide between.

Me: Hi, can you tell me why that DVD player is £30 more expensive than that one?

i'm no superhero's grandad: Well it's better ain't it?

Me: Oh right, great, so why is it better then?

i'm no superhero's grandad: Well it's more expensive ain't it?

banghead

So I went to Richersounds and bought one. But to be fair there was just as much bullst at RS, but they were more convincing.......

And you've never told a white lie to one of your customers in order to get a sale?
