Some help from the more knowledgable required here folks. I went out yesterday and ordered my first home cinema system which is going to be delivered in a couple of weeks due to the screen (Panasonic TXP42V10) and speakers (KEF KHT1005.2) being on back order with the supplier I used.

The question I have is that my Amstrad SKY+ box (NON HD) has no HDMI output on it. I have ordered an optical cable to connect the sound signal to the receiver but am not sure how to get the video signal to the receiver. Ideally I want to have just 1 HDMI cable from the receiver to the screen to allow it to perform it's "upscaling" function for non HD input so here are the two options I believe I have to work with to get the video signal from the SKY+ box to the receiver:

1. SCART to component cable
2. S-Video cable

I have read that it might be best to connect the SKY+ box to the plasma with a good quality SCART lead (suggestions welcome here) and just use the receiver to send the sound out to the KEF's. That would crush the 1 HDMI cable to panel idea but would allow the plasma to do any "upscaling" itself.

I am willing to buy a new SKY+ box if one exists that does have an HDMI out facility and resolve the problem this way, so suggestions welcome here if there is one.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling but I know you guys like as much information as possible before offering the best advise biggrin

All input (no pun intended) greatfully received.

I suspect the best way is connect Sky+ direct to TV with SCART or S-Video with audio to amp via optical.

However, you have invested in a mighty fine TV there - so why not upgrade to Sky HD as well.

The TV is as stunning in action as I was led to believe from posts on here when I saw it in demo yesterday with it's matching BD60 Blu Ray player thumbup

The issue with SKY HD is that I don't believe it is a patch on the American HD broadcasts I watched when on holiday there in September. Quite a few other people I know aren't "blown away" by their SKY HD either and feel that the picture quality is not what they were led to believe. This could be down to a whole host of things (equipment, set up, small screen in large room etc) but I've not seen what I would call a decent SKY HD demo in any shops I have been into.

I suppose that I could get the HD kit installed for a few bob (£100 from Murdoch's site) and pay an extra £10 a month on top of my current subscription and the picture won't be any worse than it is on my current non HD set up........SKY have to up their HD broadcast quality soon don't they ??????

You dont mention the AV reciever that you have, that may help with possible solutions.

Your sky box as im sure you are aware can output Composite video, S-Video and RGB. If your gunna use RGB (wich will give best quality)your gunna need to leave a scart between the sky box and the TV that will quash your 1 HDMI requirement.
Composite video is the lowest quality connect (but with best compatibility) but i would leave that out of the equation due to its quality.
S-Video is pretty much overlooked by most people, and lots of them will tell you its crap... well i defy them to tell the difference between it and RGB
One other option depending on your amps capability would be to add a RGB-YPrPb converter box to the RGB ouput of the sky box but i doubt it would give any improvment over S-Video due to the conversion process.
Final option would be to buy a Sky HD box even if you dont want a HD subscription as it would give you the HDMI output you require and if you get an original one you would get YPrPb output also wink

My advice using what you have now (and im assuming your amp will output the S-Video via its HDMI) would be to connect sky up using the S-Video and of course an optical, this would keep with your requirement for 1 HDMI connection to the TV with least picture quality loss due to connection types.

If your amp wont do any conversions then your gunna need to leave a scart connected aswell as the HDMI from the amp.

EDIT to add...... DOH!! its in the title :P

OK forget most of that as it dont have S-Video inputs, looking at the pic of the rear panel its only HDMI or Component so there is your choice, get a SKY HD box or a RGB-YPrPb converter for your current sky box.

Hmmm, it also has a component monitor out, that kinda tells me that it dosent send the component out via the HDMI...bugger, do you have a link for an instruction book for it?

Stupid question to someone who knows more than me (not difficult in this subject tongue out ) but can I buy a SKY HD box, match it up to my current card and get the same service but not in HD format ?

Also, the Yamaha site details the receiver as having an S-Video input but no output. Does that mean I can use an S-Video lead and optical cable to connect to my SKY box and then have the single HDMI cable to the screen I was hoping for ?

Cheers in advance......a complete novice biggrin

Regarding your first question...yes. You pay SKY an extra tenner a month for the HD services. I only got mine switched on recently as I only just bought an HD telly, but I had the SKY+ facility since I had the box installed back in May.

Regarding your second question....I can't see any S-Video inputs on the back of your amp (I'm looking at a pic from Richer Sounds website?)

Looking at the back of your amp ( here), and providing you have component video outputs (Red/Blue/Green) on your Sky+ box, I'd say that component video (on AV1) would be the best way to go from Sky+ box to AV Receiver, coupled to an Optical cable for sound, then HDMI from Receiver to TV.

Depends on what outputs are available on the Sky+ box though - a bit of googling reveals a lot of different types so I can't be sure...

The picture of the rear of the 765 on the Yamaha UK site clearly has an S-Video input showing on it now that I've had a closer look so I should be OK using that an an optical lead. The picture on the Richer Sounds web site appears to be for the US version of the receiver as it clearly shows it is for 120v use and also has an input for Sirius radio which is only broadcast in the US and Canada ....... somewhat misleading spin

I'm not sure if this has been resolved by Yamaha now but they released the first(?) batch of 765's and 1065's without the ability to assign optical sound to the hdmis's. So with sky HD you wern't getting dolby digital, which was a major oversite on their part and required the customer or dealer to flash the amp wth updated SW from Yam's website via USB.

This resolved the issue and you had a new option in the menu called 'Assign'. Major faff though so check your menu for this option.
