Is it possible to legally get UK Satellite in Europe (France, Switzerland etc)? I am aware that there are people who will provide kit and Sky cards, but how legit is this, and is it possible to get a full Sky+ / HD type setup legally?

yes you can, search for astra 28deg footprint, It will show you radiating zones increasing by dish size required (normally minimum).

And yes you can, to an extent. It is common knowledge that people often take a UK SKY account abroad. IF you get caught, they turn it off. There are websites out there that will 'straight up' sell you the full working package from their website, rather then from a pub carpark.

Mate of mine had a satellite dish in his apartment in Monaco for years...connected up to a Sky box which was registered at a UK address. It was very common practice over there as the Monaco TV was st.

I know he had to have it registered to a UK address so you need a friend or relative that doesn't have Sky to help you out.

Not sure why you said "yes" in response to my question about getting Sky Legitimately and then go on to point out that if you get caught they turn it off! The reason I want to do it legitmately is precisely so they don't turn it off!

Read the OP! I said I want full Sky HD (ie with movies sport etc) not freeview.

Not so. If you want anything morer than freeview (eg HD Movie channels), you need the box connected to a phone line so they can check up on you. An International dialing code would be a bit of a giveaway. I guess my question is, is there a different contract arrangement for overseas viewing?

thats not entirely true. You can take them abroad and not connect them to the phoneline. Every so often sky will do a random check on accounts and ask the box to dial home, disconnecting them if they dont. This may happens after a month or never, depending on luck.

edited to add

I dont think there are any legit ways of doing it.

You cannot get a contract to view SKY overseas.

If you have a card you can get all channels it's pay per view that you need a phone line for and if you have the required set up (ie double thing on the end of your dish) you can use sky plus too!!

I have never heard of anyone being "cut off" becuase their box didn't respond to the ping down the phone line.... how could they, you don't recieve anything from the phone line to tune into the satelite....

As a slight wink disclaimer I know no-one doing this, I have no ex-pat friends, I live in the UK at the address that I tell everyone and have done so for the lat 4 years.

There are agreements in place with satellite providers, they are licensed to provide in certain geographical areas only, which is why when found out they terminate it, this is due to legal agreements signed with content providers to different carriers based on country, IE the football rights in France will be sold to Canal+ in France, but Sky Sports in the UK, if SKY were to be allowed in France then it would violate this agreement, so legally no they cannot provide it. It is true though that the satellite footprint would allow someone to use their equipment abroad though, however SKY cannot and will not condone this as it would be breaking trade agreements and probably some laws.

in theory and for contractual/legal reasons, yes, but in pactice, not flippin likely, so long as they keep getting the direct debits no-one really cares, of course if you shove it their face they'll HAVE to cut you off as they're obliged to do so by territorial broadcasting rights.

Sky boxes will work without a phone line but sky's installation and STB prices are based on a subsidy that requires connection, you can opt to pay the extra and I've heard of people just unplugging the line and getting nothing more than the occasional snotty letter. The phone line's only there for PPV services and market research (see what you're watching etc) so not imperative.
