Posting on behalf of a mate as I would never spend such a piffling amount on a telly, these things are important.

Anyway. Back when I was buying a telly is was essentially a fact that you got a Panasonic, Plasma. Unless you're spending a lot more brass, in which case it was a Pioneer Kuro.

What's the state of play at the moment with that budget in mind?

Der....do you do a "speshal price" for folk on here with more than 96 months service? If you're reading this smile

If on a budget, take a good look at the LG TVs. Whatever the type and size, you get lots of bangs for the buck with LGs.

Recently got myself a LG 37LH4000, cost me 489 i think, special offer, I believe they are generally around 530 now though?

It's brilliant for the money, Full 1080HD, Loads of inputs and outputs, looks lovely. And best of all you can switch on (in service mode) the ability to watch movie files from a usb stick or hard drive! smile

For the cost of the blu-ray player you could get a lovely Panasonic 42G10 with a free blu-ray player.

£700-750ish while stocks last.

Just having a look around, plasmas and Lcds are about the same sort of money... at that size, which is better and why?

thanks

I got my 42G10 with Bluray from John Lewis for £699 last weekend but thats now gone back up to £799. This seems to be the best deal at the moment at M&S for £750, although using something like Quidco you could get cashback on this to further reduce the price. Id get in quick though as the offer of the free Bluray at M&S has come/gone/changed several times in the last few weeks so no guarantees it will still be the same offer in a day or two. Its also worth having a read of the recent pages of this thread on AVForums for the cheapest deals on the G10 generally.

Plasma still reigns supreme, but some models of LCD are getting very close on all areas, bar motion resolution - still their main weakness due to how LCD pixels operate to produce the picture.
Why is but a function of their design - much like why a free-flowing exhaust results in more power from the engine.

Dave, as advised already, the Panny G10 would be spot on, along with the free B-R Player, if he can act quickly so as not to miss out.
His viewing distance means he would ideally need a 50", and bring the sofa forward another few feet, to see the full benefit of B-R movies in 1080p.
Otherwise, HD from the FreeSat/Sky+HD/etc at 720p will be just grand, and SD/DVD's will be nicely rendered too.

I have a feeling its an online deal only, most M&S's don't have an AV department and even if they do Im not sure this deal will be available. Worth checking if he's making a special trip.

Just to tempt you a little more, John Lewis now have the £699 42G10 with Bluray offer running on their main site, so should now be that price in all stores too
