Without getting too bogged down in the old 'Plasma vs LCD' debate I'd like some opinions on the pick of the bunch of 46-50" size screens.

I have a old Panny TH-37PV500 which is in fine fettle, but I have been thinking about up-sizing and getting a 1080p set to make best use of my Blu-Ray set-up.

I get on well with Plasma and would most likely go for the same again, unless I see a particularly convincing argument for an alternative technology. Which sets though would impress most in terms of picture quality, features, build quality, etc in the stated sizes for about a £grand (give or take)?

Very quick off the mark there! smile

I've read a little about this set and the 46" version, then there's the 46G15, although not fussed about the extras that provides over the G10.

Is the 50V10 (is that right?) worth the extra if the budget was to stretch a little?

Is Panasonic really the only manufacturer in this bracket producing good screens? - (although I've always been perfectly happy with them and have two Panny sets)

50V10 is worth the money and is the default choice in a 50" application.

Rather than post a new thread, will that be suitable at a 10ft viewing distance ?
Have a 42G10 at the moment which has just gone back due to being faulty - am considering paying extra at getting a 50G10 in its place.

Out of curiosity - what happened to your 42G10? I view that at 7.5ft and it's just right - 10ft on a 50" sounds perfect.

The speaker made a popping a distorting sound whenever there was any bass.
Discovered when the Mrs turned up the volume to less than halfway while watching MTV.
Supplier said that as it was within 28 days they'd automatically replace rather than repair.
Therefore, I may speak to them about a 50 as the 42 is a bit to small for the room, but I was concerned about the viewing distance and picture quality (I don't have SKY HD yet so most viewing is SD, this is purely about getting a larger set for the room).

yes Wish i could have persuaded SWMBO that she needed another 8" in her life hehe

I ended up with the 42V10 - which is fantastic, so I imagine the 50V10 will rock.

Interesting, thanks. SD Quality is "ok" - though, in fairness, I don't really have anything to compare it to at SD level. But for HD it's great. Which doesn't help much, I realise smile

Philips 47PFL9664 with everything switched off and then a dose of Gandalfian calibration.

I had it in my lab next to something Kuronic and I tell you what...

I'm planning a new TV for Christmas but need the case size to be sub one metre wide. Based on the above is the TX-P37X10 the one to go for?

I'm afraid I know little about modern televisions, preferring to spend my time in the garage, we are on Sky+ and would get Sky HD. I would like the best picture I could get without going silly on price.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Next dilemma is 46" or 50"? I normally sit approx 10' away from the screen and watch a fair bit of SD terrestrial and sat tv. Movies are generally Blu-Ray.

I've read plenty about optimal viewing distances/screen sizes and it seems that for SD a smaller size would suit, but for HD larger is better.

Would 46" be a better compromise given my viewing habits and distance from the screen. I also think maybe 50" would dominate the room just a little too much.

Thought as much, although there's always the 'I wish I'd bought one size bigger' syndrome.

46" it is then.

I am far from an expert on this though I am in the market for a similar screen myself. You say you watch a lot of SD broadcasts so I would definitely make sure you can get a demo of an SD Sky or Freesat. Consensus seems to be that 1080p sets are considered worse for SD.

I was concerned about SD (especially Freeview) quality when considering a 42" G10 but having taken the plunge Im really pleased with it. Occasionally Freeview via the aerial looks a little soft but thats just poor bitrate broadcasts rather than the TV as I can switch to Sky from Freeview on the same channel and the picture is back to its best.

Although noticable to me, its not a huge difference and my wife certainly doesn't notice it. I think it would be the same whatever large format TV I had anyway, its simply that a large screen + poor broadcast quality means you occasionally will have a less than perfect image to watch. Its the same reason a photo often looks perfect when viewed via the small LCD on the back of the camera, but when you download it to your PC you realise it's out of focus because you can see so much more detail and imperfections than on the small screen.
