Excuse the dumbass question.

Can you buy these that aren't attached to sky, etc..? If so, what is a decent (reliable) but most importantly, simple model..?

Looking to purchase one for my Mum, in order to clear the house of a billion video tapes - she's not particularly comfortable with technology...

You're better off searching PVR or Freeview+ smile

I did loads of research into these last year and concluded the two you need to look at are Humax and Topfield. Both have quite impressive followings so you can find out all you need to know here:

http://www.toppy.org.uk/

I bought a Humax 9200 from http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/ - which is a like their factory shop. Very pleased with it, the menu interface is the best I've seen on a telly and their customer service is excellent. Since the digital retune a few weeks ago a lot of the Humax boxes have been going through periods of running really slow. A couple of days ago I received an email from Humax saying they're going to issue an update to the boxes to fix it.

Another good resource for this sort of stuff is http://www.avforums.com

the fix for the 9150 and 9300 humax boxes is going out over the air ( make sure the box is on) or you do it via laptop with a USB-serial adapter and a null modem cable. This kit should be familar to those who play with TVR ecus.

There is a software upgrade for the 9200 coming over the air in jan, in the meantime you need to make sure it is tuned correctly as if it is picking up from more than 1 transmitter then it makes the problem worse. You need to do a default settings then stop it before it finds any channels then go into manual tune and key in the frequancies manually. Also its worth noting if you just want to watch a recording back without it locking up then just pull out the aerial and it will playback just fine wink

So just to clarify, if I were to ditch my Sky HD box and subs I can replace it with This Humax Foxsat box, using the Sky card and it will just work? IE no re-aligning dish etc?

No you will not be able to use your sky card As this is FREESAT STB (no card needed) and Not Freesat From Sky (card Needed).

But the FREESAT FoxSat uses the same Sats as Sky so no realigning the dish required. So yes on this part just plug in and away you go.
