Afternoon all,

After trying to make any sense of avforums.com and failing miserably, I thought I'd try my luck here instead!

I'm in the midst of re-decorating the livingroom and have decided to add a decent tv, speakers etc to the list..

So far, I've managed to run my speaker cable in the walls and plaster the craters left behind.. Now all I need to do is find a decent 42'' TV, AV receiver and (unobtrusive)speakers.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I am utterly clueless where this kind of thing is concerned!

£1500 - No problem!

You want unobtrusive speakers, so I suggest something like the Kef Eggs:
http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-packag...

Then you'll need an AV amp to power them:
http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/o...

or perhaps this for a bit more money or an alternative manufacturer
http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/y...

That leaves £750 odd for a Plasma (NOT LCD) TV, so recommend a Panasonic Viera which is very highly regarded on here. Size is up to you, but they blend very quickly once used to them so go for a 42" and don't muck about:

This leaves you money left for the necessary speaker cables, HDMI etc etc.

You can play about with options with the AV amp as there are so many to choose from, but for unobtrusive speakers you are more limited for quality hence Kef Eggs. For TV's you are also a bit limited if you want quality and not Korean pish, hence Panasonic Viera

I have listed up here Richer Sounds links as it's easy, but Deristrictor, who can be found on this forum, will be able to help as he has his own shop and is a fantastic source of information and will do you a deal!

Great stuff, thanks!

Is there particular benefits of plasma over lcd? I've heard from a few people now that panasonic are the way to go.

What Hifi seem to rate LG, however. I take it that may not be the case in reality?

I was considering this:

or would I be much better off with something like:

In the meantime, I'll drop a note out to derestrictor!

By all means, go for a 1080p set, but not sure why you would need to if you are sitting more than 6ft away from it as the human eye is not able to distinguish the difference.

A Panasonic Viera, set up properly, over an LG every day of the week.

Thanks for that.. My knowledge where these things are concerned is limited to finding out the latest buzzwords associated with a product and trying to find one with as many as possible!

I'll be about 8' away so according to that calculator, I'm just a bit too far away to notice the benefit..

This may be a good excuse to buy a bigger TV...
