How to connect PS3 to speakers?
Discussion
Hi we have a Samsung LCD TVand Virgin cable tele. We have just bought a Slimline PS3 and want to be able to get rid of the current DVD player and use PS3 to watch DVD and Blue ray.
Does anyone know how we can connect the PS3 to the 5 speakers we have to get audio alongside the movies? We currently have the PS3 connected via HDMI to the tele and the speakers connected directly to the current DVD player.
If you can be as simple as possible as I'm not the most technically minded!!!

You could use an AV receiver. They start at about £140 like the following from Richer Sounds -

what is powering the speakers? can you provide a model number? if whatever it is, is half decent, you should be able to plug the ps3 and the lcd panel into it (each via hdmi), and use it to switch sources as and when you need.Does anyone know how we can connect the PS3 to the 5 speakers we have to get audio alongside the movies? Have managed to get sound - playing DVD on PS3 which is connected to TV by HDMI.
Speakers still connected to JVC Cinema System and this is connected via SCART to TV (No HDMI cable on JVC).
Have set JVC system soource to 'TV sound'. Is this the best way? Is this still giving surround sound/5.1?
Many thanks for help so far. Will definately look at getting the AV receiver suggested as a long term solution, looks much better.

The speakers are powered by the DVD player - it is a JVC DVD Digital Cinema System TH-S11
from what I found on the web, it doesnt appear to have either hdmi or optical audio inputs. bummer.best you could do would be specify video out via HDMI and audio out via Multi AV on the ps3. then connect an RCA cable into the audio in (red/white inputs) on your JVC. that should do it.

The problem with the "all in one" system as you've found is that they tend not to be upgradeable. Have a good read of the manual and see if it gives any tips on how to connect an HDMI source properly, or as mentioned pass an optical signal to it for decoding, but if it won't do either of these then it may be time for an upgrade if you want to bin the unit and get full 5.1 surround.
As posted above, your best bet is a AV reciever. can pick them up for about £150. Just worth checking your speakers will be OK with one, but i am sure they will.
I have a PS3, and i use the optical out into my AV receiver which then kicks out full surround sound to my five Tannoy speakers, and it sounds very good indeed.
