Hello all,

My Mum's asked me to find her a decent 37" LCD TV for our lounge - replacing our Sony 28" CRT. I've done a bit of research and the Sony 37W5500 seems to do well, but I've not really branched out my research as I have a Sony 40W4000 and have been hugely impressed by its PQ and blacks. So for a budget of around £650, what should my mum be looking for?

I gather that the best panels generally start at 40", but we can't physically fit most 40" TVs in the space we have available. Any suggestions that I should look into?

Any reason it HAS to be LCD?
Panasonic's 37X10 Plasma would more than fit the bill, and give a picture on SD material more akin to that of the CRT being replaced.
Should be had for less than the amount mentioned too.

I've just bought a Panasonic TX-P37X10B 37" plasma television on advice here and extremely impressed with it. It's a much better picture than the similar sized LCDs and well within your budget (various places offer them at under £500).

We've just taken my 40" Sony down there and it fits fine, so any 40" suggestions in the original price bracket (maybe upto £700) gleefully considered biggrin Apologies for the about turn, turns out my brother's tape measuring wasn't within tolerance…

ETA: No desperate need for an LCD – whatever gives the best picture, best movement yet wouldn't die a horrible screen-burny death if I played games on it lots.

No 40" Plasma, but the 42X10 or 42G10 for Full HD (need to be sitting 5' from it to appreciate B-R material though) are under/just over budget.
With the G10, you have the advantage of FreeSat built in, if you have a Sky dish to feed it - might need a multi-output LNB to feed both it and the Sky box simultaneously.

Gaming is a piece of wee on modern Plasmas, so long as you're half sensible about the settings, and leaving the screen on whilst the console is paused for any real length of time - an hour or two. 5-15 mins is not a problem.
