My KDL40W5500 has built in freeview, but I can't seem to find any channels? I have attached the TV to the fixed aerial in the wall and tried the analogue and digital channel search setup. Any ideas??

Did it used to work there recently? or did any TV work on that aerial point recently?

If its not finding anything then its either a faulty tuner in the tv or more likely an aerial system problem.

If you can plug in another TV or freeview box that is already tuned in (and you have seen working), if you get 'no signal' on that then its the aerial system if it does work then more than likely your TV is at fault (assuming you have been tuning correctly).

Aerial sysstem faults can start at the roof with an aerial that is misaligned (fell off etc..) to cable breaks, water ingerss, rusted out connectors or verry commonly a broken or just poor quality wall plate.

Just moved in and never used the aerial or tv before. I can pick up some very bad quality analogue channels, which makes me believe the aerial is ok.

The Sony handbook doesn't even mention freeview which is odd, but online it does say it has freeview built in.

I believe the Ariel has to be suitable for digital pick-up. If its an old one it probably won't work.

The house is only 4 years old so it should be ok. The aerial is in the loft. Might have to go and have a look.

I've recently just moved into a flat which is surrounded by tall trees. I can pick up analogue channels, although they're not very watchable and the viewing gets even worse with this bad weather we are having. Freeview (built into the TV and a separate box) won't even entertain me with trying to work on such a low signal.

We've fitted a booster which gave the channels colour over the black and white that they were at first. We are having an aerial guy come out and see what he can do;

Plan A: See if there is a problem on the roof, if Freeview could be achieved, fix the fault.

Plan B: Freesat will be installed - runs off a sky dish but it's a one off payment like Freeview.

if its a newish house is there a sat dish up?

Reason for asking is a lot of developers install the sockets but no actual aerial. If the previous owner had sky there may never have been an aerial fitted.

If your picking up a weak analogue signal then its a sure sign of an Aerial system problem, if its a new house then its a possible there is no actual aerial as builders put in all of the wiring and run it upto the loft but dont actually fit an aerial. If there is one up there then tbh a loft aerial isnt the best way of doing things, also have a look to see if there is a distribution amp that could be switched off/faulty.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have been into the loft and there is no aerial! The wall socket must be attached to nothing. I'm now itching all over from fibreglass and round the gf's mum and dad's to watch tv hehe

There is a satellite dish with 2 wires poking through the wall. Can I watch freeview via the satellite dish? Or just buy Sky?

You can use the satellite dish for Sky or Freesat. Sky is pay monthly and Freesat is a one off payment for a set top box like Freeview.

Freesat looks good. What box do people recommend? The Bush box for £60 looks ok. I'm not too bothered about pausing live tv, just want some a range of channels and the HD is a bonus.

As I've recently been looking into it, I've been recommended the Humax boxes. The HD boxes retail for around £130 for the Humax HD from Richer Sounds.

If you want the recording boxes (similar to Sky +), you'll need two feeds to be run from the dish. The non recording SD and HD boxes run from a single feed.
