Dark and rainy Sunday. So what better time than to watch 'Zulu' on the month-old Sony BDP-360S blu-ray player. It's plugged into the the router as per the instruction manual. 'Zulu' loads up and a message flashes up advising me to upgrade the firmware over the internet and not to turn off the power. The update bar progresses nicely. All updates downloaded. Now the player whirs away and starts the installation. It gets to four out of nine updates installed. Then the screen goes black apart from a large yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. The player freezes with "sys err" in the display. User manual says' refer to Sony service centre'.

So the player is now in the authorised repair shop for a week and I'm without a player and feeling slightly miffed that it's not my fault.

I'm wondering. Is this a known fault? What happens next time I'm asked to perform an update? I just want to watch DVD's not run the Large Hadron Collider.

I know its not the same, but my Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte did the same thing. (yes, someone did buy one biggrin)

Plugged it into the laptop to download a few photos, and it told me I needed new firmware.

So off it trots to download and install the firmware, but it failed halfway though, and wouldn't reconnect to the software updater.

It had to go back to Nokia for 2 weeks to be reflashed.

I no longer do firmware updates, unless it refuses to work without them.

I'm surprised Sony didn't replace the player for you then and there as it might still have been within 28 days of purchase.

The Oppo BD-83 can go back to earlier firmware, if an update fails or if the player hangs.

Dunno why other machines don't support this feature.

Because Oppo are a company run by technicians and enthusiasts.

Most other volume AV companies are run by accountants.

I think the accountants got involved somewhere thought with the cancelation of the 'European' Oppo BD831 player. wink
