John Lewis and an honest salesman
Discussion
Afternoon off, popped to John Lewis to look at a few things and found myself looking at LCD and Plasma TVs as whilst I think the picture is great I'm continuously made to feel poor for only having a 28" CRT set.
Asked the chap if I could borrow a pen to jot down a few model numbers and got chatting to him and he basically advised me to keep what I'd got.
Said himself that unless you have a lot of HD stuff and especially if you watch Sky and a lot of non HD stuff that in his opinion other than the space saving you're worse off with an LCD or Plasma set.
He also put a few sets on to the store aerial to show me the differences in quality, and IMO plasma came out much better, however he then went on to point out that Plasma's tend to start at 40" or so and you really do want to be sat at least 12-14 feet away, which I wouldn't be.
I was shocked, I thought they were supposed to be trying to sell me stuff

The question is, will you go back to John Lewis again?
If yes, you just answered your own question.
Good customer service is ALWAYS rewarded with better long term sales. Plus you will no doubt recommend JL to the rest of your friends and family, etc, etc....
Much better than a short term grab it quick sale....

I have an old 21" CRT I was given when I bought my house 2 years ago, with the old 4:3 ratio (not widescreen). Does it work? Yes. Is the picture ok? Yes. Do I plan to put a perfectly good TV in the skip just to replace it with a nice looking widescreen LCD or Plasma? Nope. When it goes bang it'll get replaced, until then I'll spend my money on something more important.
We have three CRT TVs. One 32" that I bought brand new five years ago, one 28" with Dolby surround sound that I bought for £20 about 18 months ago and one 28" one that I got off my mate when I bumped into him on the way to the tip with it!
I guess I will upgrade to a flat thing at some point, but as none of us in the household are particularly gogglebox motivated it'll be for the space saving rather than technological or snobbery reasons.

+1 My Sony CRT is nearly 20 years old, and to date i've not had a problem. Yes i'd like a flat screen, but when/until it goes pop, i'll replace it, but why spend when you don't have to?I have a 10+ year old 32" CRT and, apart from some demo HD stuff, I have yet to see a picture on any LCD or Plasma that is enough better, if at all, that it makes me want to change. If and when the majority of broadcast TV is transmitted in HD, then it might become worthwhile. At is stands, since I have no intention of paying extra for HD channels and have no intention of replacing my entire DVD library with Blu-Ray, I really don't see what there is to gain.
