Should be an easy one this. I love these tangent speakers:

But appreciate they might need some kind of amp, preferably with an ipod / imac interface capability as well as front speakers to make it all work nice. A built in dvd player might not go a miss either I suppose.

Anyone have any idea what I need?

As the image is hotlinked from Amazon I popped over there for a look...

Tell me I'm sucking eggs but one guy has written in the reviews that the price is per speaker, not a pair.

As you were.

Yeah, spotted that. It does clearly say SPEAKER and show one speaker. Why anyone would think they're getting more than one is beyond me.

you'd be suprised wink I delivered a TV the other day and the customer was fully expecting a stand and a DVD recorder even though she hadnt asked for them and her excuse was 'well its obvious i need them or where else would the TV go' and 'well everyone else has them'.... so there you go there is nothing as stupid as people wink

OK, one final question (or maybe two).

The layout of the room will mean that we have smallish speakers next to the TV facing us and the large tangents next to the sofa - from what i've read this is the opposite to what we should be doing. Will this cause issues or should we just get a small surrond sound setup and give up on the lovely looking tangents?

4 speakers?

You'll need 5, plus a sub for Dolby Digital and 7+ plus subs for Surround EX and the emerging HD audio formats.

I'm short on recommendations at that budget level I'm afraid but I have just put in a little Sony system for a mate as a favour which was quite interesting. Something like that and then a stereo amp and some floorstanders for stereo might be a happy medium.

Yeah, I appreciate it's not going to be like sitting in a cinema but space constraints dictate the layout and i'd rather throw the extra couple of thousand required for a better system into a holiday for the family biggrin

The fifth speaker (sub i presume) - can that go at the back for surround 5.1 or must it go at the front?

6 speakers total

Left
Centre
Right
Left Surround
Right Surround
Subwoofer

This little Sony thing was a BDV360IS, tiny tiny speakers, size of golf balls but suprisingly good sound.

It's less than ideal to have the Floorstanders functioning as "rears" and smaller speakers at the front. FOr one thing, my amp will only allow the Fronts to be "large" speakers (i.e. it feeds them more bass) or all to be large speakers, not rear speakers only. THIs means that either you set them all to small and lose the low end bass response, or you set it up back to front so your sound stage is backwards, meaning it would sound very odd indeed.

I have floorstanding fronts - like those tangents - and bookshelf rears in my set up and I don't have a sub. It sounds fantastic and on about what you want to spend. If you have a small room, consider either losing the sub-woofer or losing the floor standers and having 4 smaller speakers and a sub woofer to handle the bass duties.
