Having got all excited ordering our 60" Kuro I'm now getting the willies about the viewing distance. The TV room is 140" front to back, lets say my eyes are 14" from the wall and after wall mountimg the set sticks out say 6", giving a viewing distance of 120". This is the minimum that is recommended on the Pioneer website, and I'm wondering now whether we'd be better with the 50". The installer has said 2 x screen for HD and 2.5 for normal, and the shop supplying the Kuro have said similar, with a caveate that the Kuro is so good that maybe normal schools don't need to apply quite as much.Hoqwever,I'm concerned that the wife will feel sick!I might add that it will be mounted low at eye level.
Any thoughts to put me out of my misery?

I'm sure Plotty / Der will be along shortly. We have a 600A and it's bloody lovely - having looked at all the "official" measurements, we ended up just making a cardboard/newspaper shape of the relevant dimensions, then moving it around on the wall with us sitting down until we found a position we were comfortable with.

THX recommendations are 6 to 9 foot for that size - you will be fine

I have to view mine from about 15 foot and it nearly looks like a regular telly from there frown

This was an interesting article that put my mind at rest. http://www.hdhes.com/tv/hdtvviewdistance.aspx
Although, gaming wise,(don't really do anything other than Wii at this stage)we will be closer still.

I cant see how that can be comfortable, I'm watching a pioneer 42 inch from 9 feet and it feels v close.

Your life can't be too bad if you're stressing over the viewing distance from the best telly ever made.

I sit 10 feet from a 50" Kuro and every day I wish I had bought the 60" one.

At the weekends I watch films on my projector. It is a 112" wide 2.35:1 screen which is like watching letterbox films on a 128" 16:9 screen. I sit 12-13' back. I'm therefore viewing at approx 1.4 x screen width seating distance which is about a third of the way back in a typical cinema and around the SMPTE and THX 'recommended' seating distance with a viewing angle of approx 36 degrees...I don't find it too big and in fact I've found that sometimes I'd like to sit closer. biggrin It's what you get used to. Even a 60" TV would seem small after that....

I am watching my 63 inch from 14 feet.

At less than ten feet SD looks like a jumpy mosaic and would be very difficult to watch if that helps.

Many thanks Plotloss, I was trying to make sense of some of that on the website I posted above. On what your saying, am I right in thinking that 10ft is a decent mean/compromise for a 60?

interesting just how close you have to be to see the difference technically, based on the aquity of the human eye ... - 10 foot from a 60" screen and the eye cannot tell the difference thats its 1080p

..hence the THX recommendations I guess.....

..good job they dont advertise this stuff on a big sign in the shops eh....people wouldnt flock in their droves to "Must have 1080p" if a sign said that youd never sit close enough to notice LOL wink

It is all a big numbers game.

In marketing speak they are making a new market identifier to position the newest and best so that they are seen as better value or worth more.

It used to be screen size, but when that settled down to people buying the size they want for the room, then it was HD Ready and the new buzzword - Full HD meaning 1080p.

Remember when 100Hz first came out? Now it is 200Hz and even 600Hz.

It is the Gillette new 2,3, 4 blade razor all over again!

Then... when 1080p was everywhere it is how *thin* your screen is. I don't know about you but I have never once measured the thickness of my TV and wouldn't notice at all if it halves or doubled overnight...!

Now we can add photos directly I have this picture originally posted on AVForums that shows the viewing distances and angles relative to the THX, SMPTE guidelines. Note that this is for a 2.39:1 screen ('Cinemascope' to use the generic, though not 'technically' correct term). It would also apply for those watching a 2.39:1 film (a large percentage of modern films) on a 16:9 screen with letterboxes, in which case use the width not the screen height as this remains constant on a TV for 16:9 and 2.39:1 content.

I was wrong in my earlier post and my setup is greater than 36 degrees viewing angle, which means I am only within THX farthest recommended range and near to SMPTE referance, which is pretty surprising for a near 10' wide screen at 12-13' you might imagine that I'm too close and/or the screen is too big, but that doesn't seem to be the case (it wasn't planed this way it was a lucky fluke if I'm honest wink ).
