I'm getting a little bored of have 3 or 4 remotes to use depending on what I'm trying to use. Does anybody have a suggestion as to which universal remotes are any good?

I don't need anything too fancy, just something that's easy to use and setup, ideally with a windows based GUI that helps with the setup.

Harmony 885 user here and it's great.

The only problem is that it's not the easiest in the world to setup (uses a web based application) but once it's done you never have to touch the setup again unless you add or replace any devices.

One of the best things I've ever bought.

If you're worried about the setup I think you can download the setup application first and have a play around with it.

i use a harmony one to control....xbox,ps3, amp, sub, tv and lights - works perfect and very customisable (for example...i have the lights on a set hard button for all devices...so no matter what you are watching/playing the same button will always dim/kill the lights in the room.

Does the 360 have an IR port? Also being nosey, what do you control your lights with?

360 works fine with it - its own remote is IR (if you had one)

Only prob was the PS3 which is bluetooth...but there's a cheap box which you pair with the PS3 that takes the IR from the harmony and sends it by BT to the PS3 - works great.

Lights are varilight (£30) and work perfect. We have 4 wall lights in the lounge in two pairs...i can dim/off/on either pair independently.

I also got a standby saver bar (the thing on dragons den to save the world) but i use it for nothing more than plugging my corner lamp into so i can also control that by remote biggrin again, works perfect.

I presume you had to buy the Harmony Bluetooth adapter for the ps3 - does it make the remote too bulky?

Just had a look at the website and it seems that the remote switches they do are dimmers, which won't work with the energy saving light bulbs frown

The BT adapter for the PS3 doesnt attach to the remote....its an IR reciver that sits with all your gear (mine is bluetacked next to the PS3....its small and easily knocked to the back of the shelf by kids!) It plugs into the mains and thats it....remote send IR signal to the unit which send BT signal to PS3...works perfect (havent used the ps3 thumbpad thing since we got it...PS3 is for movies only, we have 360 for games)

No...vari lights dont work with energy saving bulbs...which is fine cause i dont use them biggrin

Another vote here for the Harmony One. Replaced 4 x Remotes for TV/Sky/AV Amp/DVD which previously cluttered the coffee table.

Works on an "Activity" basis - ie you set up buttons for "Watch Sky", "Watch DVD", "Watch TV", etc. Setup was easy via web application, then download settings to device. Settings are maintained online in case anything happens to your remote

Also lets you set up 24 favourite channels with icons on screen.

All very wife/kids friendly

yep...if you hit "play PS3" and it doesnt work you just press help and it guides you on an idots trip thorugh the set up...ie - is TV on? Is PS3 on? Is amp on? etc, etc.....cant go wrong, my 6 year old finds it very simple.

Makes compliacted set ups with amps, etc very simple to.....i have each "activity" showing the amp power button on the lcd....so if you want to watch sky but not use the amp you can turn it off and it re-directs audio to the tv...all from the same "activity" page.

I have a Harmony One bought to clear the coffee table and make it a bit easier for the wife. She refuses to even try and use it though! "It's too complicated" she protests, but is still more than capable of delivering huge web projects, I think she isn't trying hard enough!

mine was like that at first...so we (me and all the kids) called it the "grown up presser"....she lasted about a week of being asked "mummy, why cant you use the grown up presser?" before she gave in.
