WTF happened to Hi Fi

Not got an amazing sytem but a few £s worth.
I want to enjoy recent music. Recommend me a system for say £1k that i won't want to turn off with todays dire quality CDs. Mine sounds awesome with old properly recorded stuff but can i enjoy anything post 90's?

Unfortunately more modern listening equipment doesn't have the ability to undo the handiwork of the mix/mastering engineer who piled in way too much compression and limiting (For the sake of loudness).
Some decent (expensive) speakers are more dynamic though, so will apparently give you some of that edge back. But then you'll get even more of that edge when you go back to the older stuff again. So you can't win..
