Right, our dvd/hd player has given up the ghost and to be fair at 8 years old it's due replacing. The TV is 10 years old, and things have moved on now to a point that I think LCD is good enough to justify replacing the telly as well. We have a small room, and don't want anything bigger than a 32" screen, and we don't want to spend more that £1K tops. We have freeview and don't want Sky. I'm thinking
Samsung LE32B550A5 TV
Panasonic BD-35 bluray
Humax PVR
Any other suggestions ?

While it's almost a 'no brainer' (hate that term) to buy the BluRay player, you might find it doesn't really show much difference over DVD on a 32" (unless you sit really close). I have a 32" in my conservatory and the nearest seat is about 2 metres away and the difference is just noticable....further back and there's not so much in it (to justify the extra cost of the discs). If you currently have a CRT TV then you may will find that even a 37" LCD/Plasma will take up no more space than your existing 32" CRT, so for the small extra cost I'd recommend going for this larger size, then the benefits of BluRay will be more apparent.
It's an ever increasing spiral of bigger=better=more expensive

It IS well worth going for as big a TV as you can afford and fit into the space. 37" tellys really aren't much bigger than 32" ones. As soon as you see a Blu-Ray at 1080p (full HD resolution) on it you'll know where your money went. Most 32" TV's are "HD Ready - 720p" and not "Full HD - 1080p". There is a noticable difference. The higher resolution allows you to sit closer than you otherwise might do as well, increasing the immersion.
