As per usual search was a great help..

At present I have these They're ok but just can't handle the volume that student house parties demand and therefore now crackle as a result of being wound right up.
What I'm looking for is fairly decent sound quality and riduculous amounts of volume.

I've looked around at different ones but none are really that appealing due to them having pitifully small amounts of power.
What would people suggest?

If you want real volume; purchase a secondhand amp + speakers and, use the headphone outlet on the PC to connect to the amp.

I thought about that but I know absolutely nothing about this sort of thing. Could anyone advise as that sounds like a good idea.

Maplins do a set of active speakers that look like real bookshelf hi-fi speakers.

£40 special offer - don't have a link but it is in their special offer catalogue.

You don't mention a budget, but something like if you fancy the amp & speakers route...

Amplifier

Speakers

Cables
http://www.richersounds.com/product/phono-leads/ca... (connects the PC to the amp from the sound card's line out socket.

http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables... (connects the amp to the speakers)

Or perhaps something like this if you prefer speakers with the amp built-in...
