Maybe i'm being daft...but just about to get a new TV with free sat and just wondered what sky offers me? As far as I can see the only thing it gives me over freesat/bittorrent/blockbusters is Skyone (and I only watch that for House and 24 which i tend to torrent anyway)

I'm tempted to stick a harddrive recorded thingy in with the PS3, 360, apple TV, etc and do away with sky....anyone else survive without it in this age of downloads?

Since I started torrenting TV shows, I've given up my Sky. Waste of money.
Only channels I miss are paramount and sky one.

When I moved into this place I wanted to bring Sky with me and upgrade to Sky+, but due to "technical problems" I couldn't get Sky+. So, I binned Sky off and went BT Vision.

Apart from the History/Discovery stuff (Nazis, sharks and Nazi sharks), I don't miss Sky one little bit and now pay a pittance for "Freeview Plus".

Normally i can scan every channel and don't find anything i consider worth watching.
Was very easy to live without it at uni.

I might miss the sports now though scratchchin

So would something like this:

http://www.cwdigital.co.uk/showproduct.asp?ProdRef...

Be a viable alternative? My TV has built in freesat but i suppose that wont help if i am wanting the twin recording possibilities i have with sky + right now?

We got rid of it last year, having had the full package for around ten years. Can't say it's been missed, especially as I just torrent or buy the DVD boxset of any series which are particularly good and can watch them advert free. Unless you're using Sky Sports on a regular basis, I really don't see how you'd miss it.

I got shot of sky and replaced with a Humax freesat box.

Spot on, records and pauses just like a sky+ does.

Not missed sky one bit

I bought a Humax Freesat box a while ago. Thought there would be loads of channels to watch.
Sure there are hundreds listed but most don't interest me or the missus.
I took the box back as we have a Panny CRT which has a great picture but not HD and we cut the Sky+ down to under £20 a month (no mtv etc or sky sport).

Unless you really don't watch any of the Sky channels, its difficult to justify £250 for a multi-sat HD recorder as there's not that much on non sky channels.Plus IIRC its only the Panasonic Freesat PVR's that allow you to record other inputs other than satellite - but they're circa £800..

Also... I seem to recall some of the Freesat channels are not the same quality as the Sky broadcasts. Is this right??

I used to have the full package Sky for when mates came round and wanted to watch movies or sport. I hardly ever watch TV and never when I'm home alone so I got rid of it in the end.

In manage just fine. biggrin

I first got into Sky when I was young, 18, it was down to the bad influence of a gang of 'mates' I hung around with. I was a regular user for 2 or 3 years, then the group I used to do Sky with moved onto harder stuff. I had slowly been realising that Sky was doing me no good, and I was determined to give it up. I quit my crappy job and moved to Uni and managed three years where I was clean. Unfortunately upon leaving uni I returned home, I couldn't a job, and I relapsed. My Sky usage was worse than ever. It was starting to wreck my relationship, ruin my friendship. I was living just for sky and it was costing me.

After 2 years of living like that, I managed to kick it. I've been sky free for 10 years now... I just take it one day at a time. The hardest thing for me is walking past the windows of Curries.digital, but I just look the other way and stay strong.

thanks for listening.

stay strong, think of your family! don't let them down now. If you give in now you will regret it for ever.

Although I might still be in somthing of a 'honeymoon period'
Having only recently upgraded to Sky+HD. I think I manage my tv viewing much more efficiently now.
I simply record most programs that look interesting. (remote record via t'internet is handy). So when I have time to watch a little telly there are plenty of thing saved up. I find I'm watching more programs now instead of wasting time aimless channel hopping.
However #~I think the extra £10 or so for HD is a bit much give the number of HD channels available at the moment.

I suppose this is my problem...i have a pretty full schedule of TV without sky...tonight, for example, i'm going to be playing a little xbox and then watching Rescue me and House on bittorrents via the PS3. I dont have time to sky hop! The only thing i would miss is the big Sky 1 shows in HD (like 24) but its a lot for just that (i could by the bluerays if i wanted to i suppose!)

That's what I found, so often there'd be a decent program on at 11:30pm (way way past my bed time) and i'd simply record it and watch it when the wife and kids were out wink

If can connect laptop/comp to TV, can torrent HD TV as well. It will just depend on if you can be bothered with additional download times/larger file sizes and coded/VLC player.
