I was wondering about why not have a wiki of the best TV's at certain price points as defined by the professional TV shifters on here (Der and Plotters) instead of having to wade through the interminable number of threads asking "Which TV should I buy?"

For example, what <30inch, <40, <50, <Imax. What is best for £500, 1000, 2K to Whatever is the best no matter what the cost.

Maybe also with a little bit about things to look for in a purchase, such as size Vs. viewing distance etc.

I realise it would be a bit of work, but it might stop the constant barrage of threads saying the same thing.

In alot of cases 'best' is just personal opinion and there are plenty of people on here with varying opinions. In alot of cases Panasonic seem to be the front runner at the moment.

I understand that, though the opinion of people who see the things day in and day out to me holds a lot more water than the opinion from someone who has just looked at tellys in comet and curry's!

It's more of a way to try and help reduce the clutter on this section of PH and I for one, would find the information extremely useful.

It is a bit cheeky I know!

Think about it.

It if were that easy then wouldn't PH just be a case of getting an expert to tell us the:

"Best car for 10k", "Best car for 20k" etc...

Things move on on a daily basis, as do prices, and at the end of the day it is just an opinion, so it would be a lot of work for little practical benefit.

And yet people read car magazines or listen to someone like Clarkson to help them work out the good from the bad.

Personally I like listening to people who know what they are talking about and am not arrogant enough to think that I know better than someone who deals with these things for a living. I'd happily take their advice and buy based on that. I(and most of the rest of us) don't have the experience or time to do anything but listen to expert opinion and then act accordingly. TV's are far more confusing than car buying, but when it comes to cars or bikes, I've spent years studying them as I'm interested, whereas with TV's I don't really give a monkey's, but don't want to buy a lemon.

Justin does have a point. The industry does seem to move pretty quickly, and not for the better most of the time. The demise of pioneers range of tellies, being one of the biggest losses for some time.

I think the guys on this forum give the best advice bearing in mind the restrictions of room size, budget and what bits of kit are going to be hooked up to the panel, and how, in the main , its going to be used eg gaming, SD TV , HD TV Blu Ray. Without asking each and every person each of those questions, its difficult to give an exact solution to suit their needs.

Personally in my shop, I most of the time, recommend plasma on all screen sizes of 42 and above, if full HD is required. 37 is a bit of a grey area, as with my range, I only flog the Panny 37 in plasma and thats HD ready.

Some customers are blown away by Samsungs LED backlit kit and others think it looks dire. Showing HD and Blu Ray its pretty good and if being hung on the wall, the depth of the unit can sometimes swing the decision, especially if SWMBO is with the bloke.

I personally would advise anyone looking for a new TV to ask the bods on here but the only person that can make the final decision is the person who is viewing the screen, and has to pay for it! Just make sure wherever you do go to tell them to show SDTV. If they can't or wont, then walk.
