I've finished decorating my new lounge, and quite fancy getting something bigger than my laptop screen to watch films on etc.

I've got one big flat wall (with the two sofas facing it), which is a light colour, and fairly flat (although if need be, I can make it flatter & lighter). I've been looking at projectors, and am struggling to work out what I need (no experience).

The first question is whether a projector the best choice for this - I don't want a big plasma/lcd or similar as it's very visible from the road, not to mention very visible whan not in use. Any other alternatives you can think of?

The room is about 4m square, with a big bay window on one side (with blackout curtains). The wall to project onto is about 3m wide by 2m high of uniterrupted space - there's the door at one end of that wall. What sort of projector should I be looking for - the differences in prices are phenomenal!

I'll be using it for films, possibly played through the laptop (if that works?) or maybe add a DVD player to the system. I haven't got a TV (and don't require one) so the lack of a tuner is not an issue.

All opinions welcome - I don't want to spend a lot on this, and am not expecting perfection. As it looks like you can get a decent sized TV for £500, I won't be spending any more than that!

Thanks for your replies smile

i've just bought an HD ready Projector from PC world, £500 and i use it for outdoor cinema eveings with friends. Perfect picture. IMO not worth spending the extra £500 on top of that for a full HD one. Just HDMI it from your laptop straight into the projector. Amazing picture quality. then literally plug in surround sound and you're good to go. Can link your sky through it easily enough, and if you don't have HD then all projectors come with VGA ports to connect it upto sky aswell. Best £500 i've spent in a long while!

DavidY - Big sound is not a problem in this house! (PD2150 sub as a coffee table).

nick s - can I ask which make / model it is, and are you projecting onto a screen or a wall with it?
