How much is it to get a decent Digital TV aerial installed?

Down here the South West we have an awful digital signal and running our built in-Freeview through new TV looses half our channels, including ITV and Channel 4.

At this point we're trying to weight up our options, we've already got Virign cable internet (but it's rubbish) or going to Sky for TV (we have to have a dish and it's more expensive) or why not just get a decent digital aerial and hope we can get a decent signal.

What are the thoughts of PH?

I paid £150 for a local fitter to put up a proper aerial on a strong bracket (the previous one snapped which does bugger all to help reception biggrin). I had already put a masthead amplifier as near to the aerial as I could but inside my loft and I replaced all the downleads with double screened cable (CT100 I think, but this is discontinued now though similar quality is available). The double screening helps with interference and the better construction of this cable will also help minimise signal loss (though sharp bends can really screw it up so be careful). Having the amplifier as near to the aerial as possible reduces the amount of noise being amplified relative to the 'wanted' signal.

Hopefully as the analogue channels get turned off, they will be able to increase the digital signal strength which will help those in marginal areas (they limit the digital signal in some cases to prevent interference with the analogue signal IIRC).

and dont just hope, go to an official post code checker to see if you are in an area that can get decent reception. Dont worry about masthead amp etc, because if you cant pull in enough signal to begin with an amplifier wont help. :-)

We're in PLymouth where they've already started turning off analogue channels, BBC2 went the other week. Just a bit ridiculous that the channels are going the signals still so rubbish.

If a new aerial is around £150 I think'd rather sign onto a digital package and get a few extra channels into the bargin.

Just get Freesat. Approx £100.00 for a dish fitted and a few HD progs to boot
