There's a few threads in the Hifi section about them. I'll move this over...

Look at the Squeezebox Duet as an alternative.

Yeah, I never got the point of an expensive system where one box had to be tied to your computer. Then I bought one and all became clear. Love the Sonos, expanding it as we speak. Just bought Naim pre/power amp using Sonos ZP90 as source (iTunes Lossless), now looking for a good DAC to feed the amps. Main problem is I bought this for the spare room because I was bored, but now want to shift it to master bedroom but misses will notice new boxes and demand "compensation" frown

Bought one earlier this year. Had been considering for a while but the high cost put me off.

I then managed to get the package (amplified unit, non amplified unit, zonebridge and controller) for £295 in Dixons which is a great price.

I absolutely love it and I'd happily (probably) pay full price for it. Its so easy to set up. Comes with a manual as thick as a bible but being a bloke I didn't bother and had the whole system set up round the house in less than 30mins.

One problem with it. You will want to uprate all the other bits of tech around the house!!!! I've since gone out and got an Ipod touch as another controller (its a great app on Itunes and suprisingly its free) then I upgraded to some Denon speakers. Next up was a Buffalo linkstation so all the music can go on that and free up the PC (added bonus is the PC doesn't have to be on to access all the music) and I'm still after a further non amplified unit.

In summary its a fantastic bit of kit. But you might want to upgrade stuff to keep up with it. Sound quality is top notch also (once matched with a decent sounding system).

Combination of things:

Dixons tax free at Gatwick

The old bundle (just before this new one came out (Sonos 250))

Shop soiled (although it cleaned up very well indeed)

I said I wasn't paying the price quoted as it was shop soiled and he asked me to name my price. I think I chipped £75 off. He went and asked his manager and finally

I was lucky the manager said yes...

Although it came in its box they also threw in a load of cables (ethernet mostly) that they had used to get it working in the shop. I don't believe the Zonebridge was part of the deal but I got that as an extra as well.

Best result I've have for a long time.

Morale of the story. You don't ask, you don't get.

The Sonos kit is superb. Took it on in store about 3 months ago and its one of our top sellers already. Incredibly simple to set up but you really need a reasonably fast broadband connection to get the most out of it. Napster charges around £10.00 per month but you also get FOC Last FM if you dont want to pay that.
Approx 25000 radio stations, access to your HDD and up to 32 rooms!

Had a 6-zone set-up installed 3-4 years ago, and am still very impressed with everything, including Internet radio. I think there are more options available now, and I have recently added the Sonos application for my iPhone.

Highly recommended!!

Also a Sonos convert !. Really easy to use. I've got one in the kitchen and office straight to speakers and an unamplified one in the living room into my main HiFi. If you have a decent system then use FLAC format rather than MP3, you'll be amazed at the difference. I also use an external DAC.

Interesting to hear about the Ipod as a controller. Will this work with a plain iTouch ?

I have seen the Sonos before and it looks really impressive. I would love one, but it is a bit rich for me at the moment!

In the end I went for a Squeezebox (~£180) and have been really impressed with it. I suspect the setup isn't quite as seamless as the Sonos (although on the Mac it is pretty good) but the quality is great and it does everything I need wirelessly streaming my media collection from the computer upstairs down to my Hi-Fi in the lounge. It supports Wake On LAN so that I can leave the computer asleep and automatically wake it up when I want to listen to something and it has an ethernet port to provide wireless net access for the XBox.

I use a Linn Numerik that I had from a previous setup. I fix the volume on the Sonos and connect the Numerik to a pre-amp (also Linn) and use the analogue volume on that so no LSBs fall out the bottom of the Sonos.

RRP fpr the start up bundle inc the new touch controller is £749.00

Then for two extra wireless rooms add £349.00 per room exc speakers but you can obviously use speakers you might have already.
