Like Professor Peach, I like to see a big TV in the room. And I don't mean a large bloke by the name of Bob wearing a dress.

Lets talk BIG TV's, and a dillemma I find myself in:

I have a granny annex at Chez TS with the considerable bonus that there is no granny in it.

The space is therefore set to be a Home Cinema.

There is a back wall where, frankly, even 50 inches of Panasonics finest is going to look, well, a bit puny. With the viewing sofa some 8 or 9 feet back from the wall, there is room I figure for a truly monstrous piece of HD engineering...

Now I admit to not having auditioned the latest in projectors, but I must say that any of the local HiFi/ Cinema emporiums have underwhelmed me. I have yet to see a projector set up to take my breath away in its HD magnificance.

Mrs TS is giving up on me and just wants to buy a cheap , big, plasma and have done with it. I fear that even 60 inches may still be too small for her ( ooh yes Missus, titter ye not.. )...

So , my questions are these:

1. Can a projector screen really cut the mustard, in which case some pointers toward the right kit to consider would be great ?!!

2. Is there a decent 60 inch or larger Plasma that may do the job without costing ridiculous money?

I'm planning to purchase in around 6-8 weeks time. First of all the place is being redecorated to remove the smell of wee.

Once finished, it is set to be a veritable palace of audio visual entertainment, Naim-equipped and lovely. But the Telly issue leaves me in a puzzle.

I thank you for your patience, good people of PH.

TS smile

Can you spare me a couple of hours of your time to visit one of our demonstration facilities? Relatively local to you too.

I'll open the box and you wont look back...

Oh and what I'll show you will absolutely completely and utterly wipe the floor with Naim gear...

Oh bugger, just when I thought I had settled on the 2 channel question and made a decision...

I am listening , fella.

So why is it that all the projectors I have seen so far ( local shop not a gazillion miles from Reading ) were a bit rubbish? I think I may be prejudiced - in that whenever the white screen slides down I suddenly become terrified I'm about to witness a powerpoint presentation...

I need therapy maybe. I'm an ex-banker on the edge.

Well if you're after two channel specifically then I'm even more confident in my claim. wink

Let me know when you're free, it will take a couple of hours to take in and see all the systems but we have a range of two channel and multichannel setups, a couple of projectors for you to look at (things have moved on massively in this area in the last 18 months or so) and I'm confident that you'll be mightily impressed.

I'll drop you a mail now and we can work out a date/time.

ETA I can't mail you. Can you drop me a line and I'll respond.

Profile duly updated. Oh go on then...smile

I'm not around until later in September but I'm interested to see whats been happening and it would be good to have something in place and settled in good time for yuletide.

Oh and to clarify, I want to have 2 channel for music only and the full cinema experience for movies. I'll even have separate amplification if need be.

Oh and I have some Nola Viper speakers I am rather attached to on the CD side of things, with Bel Canto stuff at the front end...smile

Once you are at this level of audio production, it is all down to personal taste. No one company is necessarily better than another one, but the presentation of the music to the listener will be different.

A lot of people like the Naim sound, and Naim gear is well built, has great factory support and maintains fantastic resale (secondhand prices)

I've owned Naim kit in the past but grew to like other forms of presentation so have moved on.

To say that you can provide a demo that will 'wipe the floor' versus Naim equipment is very bold (and IMHO bordering on the arrogant), yes it may wipe the floor with how 'you' like your music presented, but it still might not be the OP's cup of tea.

Universal astonishment from every punter that has sat in front of it leads me to be confident but not at all arrogant in my claim.

Whilst I fully appreciate that certain people have a leaning towards a particular manufacturer sound, this kit does look at traditional reproduction issues from a slightly different angle with great effect. In addition to being incredibly well put together electronics the key is the room and the management of it even in traditionally acoustically treated spaces. In comparison with equipment from manufacturers who have not looked at reproduction from these viewpoints the performance difference is clear and even more so in the real world, in rooms that people actually live in, for instance.

No secret about the gear at all

www.lyngdorf.com is the midrange gear, their 2+2 system (Dipoles and Boundary Woofers) coupled with either the Millenium MkIV (ideally) or the TDAi220 driving the DP-1s with the SDA1275 driving the BW1s. We've just done a system utilising this setup as part of a multichannel setup and it sounds divine.

www.steinwaylyngdorf.com is their higher end components built on the same foundation (the Millenium is the Steinway amplifier) but with higher quality throughout and these are absolutely nothing short of take your breat away spectacular. Both the Stereo and the Multichannel systems are the best I've heard bar none.

I run a Seleco CRT projector, its by no means high end but I've yet to see an LCD that matches it.

When I get moved I think an upgrade to a Barco or Sony may be in order!

Chuckie the game has moved on so much it is barely credible.

Both the JVC HD750 (ideally with the lens shifter) and the Epson TW-5800 are astonishing performers for the cash.

By the time you have moved (and got the room ready) things will have moved on again. smile The replacement models (including a new 'top of the range' model) will have been launched, the HD550, HD950 (replacing the HD750) and the new model the HD990. They are due to be shown at the upcoming CEDIA event next month.

Things never stay still in the AV world....though I'm planing on getting a few more hours out of my HD350 as it's not exactly rubbish, plus my room isn't perfect so that can limit how good the results are. They may be some good end of line deals or ex demo bargains available in the near future as any dealers still holding 'last years models' need to clear them.
