Hi All,

I don't watch much TV but need a 40" screen with full HD which I believe is 1080p ?

So that is the requirement. Sound is not an issue as it will go through a nice mid market av amp with 7.1 surround.

So what is best for sub £700 ?

Sony ?

I dont understand their range of S / W / Z ??? are these refering to the quality of the screem ?

Is it worth getting a Richer sounds special ??

HELP

Panasonic 42X10 (depending on viewing distance)

Midrange amp?

Yamaha DSP-Z7, Arcam AVR600, Denon 4310 the options there are endless.

Speakers wise centre and sub are most important, then front effects, then surrounds, if you want a EX surround system then the surrounds should be dipoles with monopole rears.

Thanks Potless,

Sounds is already sorted as all is working !

My 6 year old LCD which cost about 3K have given up !!

Picture quality is the most important thing for me.....so Panasonic and Sony in the running so far.

If you can go to a 50" set then the Pioneer 5090 is still king of the hill.

Sony LCDs use Samsung film and their own processing engine so whilst they're better than Samsung LCDs they are still LCDs

How far you are going to be sat from it will dictate whether 1080p is a consideration and it almost certainly wont be.

Then 1080p will make absolutely no difference whatsoever so dont pay a premium for it.

At 12' from a 42" even HD is marginal, from that distance a 50" would be a better all round choice.

5090 if you have the budget.
50X10 if you dont.
42X10 if you must have something in a 42" frame.

I was thinking 37-40 inch !

It is going to be mounted on a wall and I don't want it over-powering the room ?

Mind you nearly all the TV's are now HD right ?

All televisions are at least HD Ready yes.

If its going to 'overpower' the room, consider managing the aesthetics rather than the screen size.

There are various options available in that regard.

I have a 46 inch Panasonic plasma in my bedroom mounted on a cabinet. Originally I wanted a 37 inch, but for the price difference and as I had the space I went the extra few inches.

The lounge aesthetically doesn't lend itself well to a large screen therefore it only has a 32 inch.

And who said size doesn't matter? biggrin

I have a 40" (full HD)TV and sit approx 12' from it. If I didn't have a separate projector screen I would have replaced the TV with something much bigger by now. I've compared BluRay and upscaled DVD (using a good quality external Lumagen scaler) on the same films and there is hardly any difference from my viewing distance if I'm honest.

If it wasn't for the fact that I use the TV as a PC monitor occasionally (where the full HD panel is great when editting video) then I could have got a cheaper 'HD ready' set and had an equally good picture quality for the SD TV that it is mostly used for.
