Advice please chaps.

I have a very simple home cinema set up just using the dvd player. Don't need anything fancier. I have a Sky+ box as well.

The feed to the HDMI connection on my Samsung 42", well, they don't any more as the HDMI connection slot on the tv seems to have collapsed and fallen to pieces.

I spoke to a repairer and he wanted hundreds of quids to take he set away, put it on some sort of stand and replace the board.

The question is, could I do this myself? I have lots of screwdrivers!! I can fix almost anything on a car, but the inner plumbing of a tv would be a new branch of surgery for me.

I have it all running through component leads at the moment (is that the right term?)but if I want to go SKY HD I need the HDMI.....I think.

Oh,and please don't mention this to SWMBO, she'll only tell me there are 243 jobs indoors that come before fixing the 'bloody telly'!

Chris

Only the latest boxes have HDMI only, the first gen Thomson boxes had component outputs as well which are fine/better for HD.

Ah, can I get my own Sky + box then?

If I did, woukld I just need a Sky HD card or is the rest of the set up different?

Sorry for dimwit questions but I'm never afraid to show how stoopid I am! :-)

You can buy your own HD box and then just get Sky to bond the card with the box and add the HD channels.

And would that box allow us to watch free to air HD like the BBC without changing subscriptions?

I believe so.

I don't have Sky myself but I'm sure someone who knows will be along in a moment.

If it is just the HDMI socket that has fallen to pieces and needs replacing then that is quite possible BUT its a tricky soldering job even for the Pro's, if you havent done any fine soldering in the past then this isnt a good thing to practice on. Even a dealer wouldnt bother, they would just price up a new board and hit you for the cost of that.
Like plotloss says, the earlier SKY HD boxes have a component out that you can use but im pretty sure they are subscription only boxes, i dont think they do a free to air option for HD (i could be wrong though), if your fail that way you would have to look for a freesat HD box that has a component output.
