Need a new TV for the lounge. Budget £1k

Sources are xbox 360, PS3 and sky (soon to be sky HD) so i like the 4 X HDMI inputs. I suppose i'll be watching about 50% non HD as (i assume) a lot of sky is still not HD.

So...for that price, any reason not to? (its just under 1k at richer sounds)

Distance from TV?
If more than 7', then abandon thoughts of seeing the extra resolution B-R movies offer at 1080P output, but let the TV downscale if you go for an HD Ready one instead of Full HD.
I'd suggest the Panasonic 50X10, but if you're dead set on a Full HD TV, then the 50G10 would be worth considering, with FeeSat HD included as standard.

viewing for TV is 12feet min to 15feet max. may sit closer for xbox games if wifey lets me get a funky little console chair thing!

so where does that leave me?

The 50PS3000 is the same panel in a different frame.

Other differences are one less HDMI, less calibration options and different speakers.

Oh, and it's 300 quid cheaper - 700 quid or there abouts delivered to your door from dixons.

As above - very little point wasting money on something you're never going to benefit from having - more pixels.
Spend the £7-800 (presumably) on the Panasonic 50X10, and enjoy 720P HD from the Sky+ HD box, and B-R movies at 1080P downscaled to fit the 768 vertical pixels.
Same story for the 360 - 720P output, let the TV scale that up to fit its 768 pixels.
DVD and SD broadcasts will look fine from that distance with a modest upscale from 576.

Ideally, from that distance, you'd want a 65" TV to show you the real benefit of regular HD, never mind Full HD, which would still need the sofa brought forward to 10-11', but at 12' you'll just get some snippets of 1080P benefit.

Same formula.

The limit is visual accuity, my calculator just works the trig to give the distances.

Idle hands, devils playground etc.

just realised.....am i right that my blue ray PS3 would be my ONLY item sending a 1080p single anyway? if so i see why the 1080p is pointless....i watch most of my films on my laptop biggrin

xbox - a little, unless it's a 360 in which case it certainly will
PS3 - Yes, much
Sky HD - Yes on HD channels, on SD I'm personally don't think so
Sky Normal - See Sky HD

Then, yes, much better. It's an HD source so it will look vastly improved.

yet no better on a 1080p TV? what good marketing then because, as a lay person, i'd have assumed a big difference and bought the "better" Tv.

I have been toying with the idea of a LG PS8000 for months now, I think they look gorgeous and have had excellent reviews. Lots of info here http://www.avforums.com/forums/lg-owners-forum/912...

Let me know how you get on with it should you get one.

PS - did you manage to find one in stock at Richer Sounds? i have been trying on the off chance for ages and they always tell me they are OOS from the suppliers and they cannot get me one.

ahh

My advice might be rubbish.

I was comparing your old CRT to the Panasonic, not to the LG.

Between the Panny and LG, it's down to personal taste. You can be blinded with science on the differences between 720 and 1080 as far as I'm concerned
