Is £500 enough to get a decent AV Reciever and 5.1 Speakers?
Discussion
have a look on www.avforums.com in the classifieds ...you should get something quite capable for that

Do people on Avforums generally take good care of their stuff? I'm wary about 2nd hand.
I've bought a few things from there, and like most stuff that's 2nd hand there will be some duffers in there. However the stuff I've bought has been fine, you will tell from the time and effort put into the advert how good the stuff will be. Also I tend to buy from people who are local so I can pick it up and check it out first. This one: http://www.quantumelectronics.co.uk/acatalog/Onkyo...
I've been told that it's a bright amp and a bright set of speakers though? :/

Buying new an Onkyo SR507 and a Jamo HC5 speaker pack will hit your budget and give you one of the best sounds at that price point IMO.
Agree,I nearly bought the Onkyo 606 (£300) at xmas but in the end went for the denon 1909 (£310), but also got the Jamo HC5 speaker pack (£200), sounds excellent SO MUCH better than the £300 sony all in one surrond sound system i had previously. Loads of inputs as you would expect.
I have my V+ box, Media centre, Xbox 360 and wii all connected to it and then the HDMi output attached to my tv, works like a charm.

All small speakers are going to sound bright. Compared to big speakers that is...I've been told that it's a bright amp and a bright set of speakers though? :/
For £500 that is a good deal.
The only way you could improve upon that would be to upgrade on the speakers and having larger ones.
A possible way of giving you upgrade options would be going for a cheap 7.1 amp and that Jamo kit, then if you feel flush later you could invest in an average set of front speakers for £60 or so, and use the 4 small speakers as side and rear surrounds.
I was thinking of getting one of these Sony 7.1 Recievers £279.95:

+ Jamo 5.1 speakers as above £224.25:

= £504.2
As someone else said above, I would then get some beefy front speakers to replace the jamo front speakers for £60-100, at which point you'll have your full 7.1 layout too. Which would be whack.

I've heard the Jamo's arent the best match, I think the Tannoy SFX5.1's are better for the Sony from what I've heard...
I've got the Tannoys. Much like you, I didn't have the biggest budget and had to get all I needed for a 5.1 setup from it. I bought a Denon 1909 (replaced now by the 1910) and got the Tannoys just to get me up and running. Paid £150 for them and whilst they are VERY far from excellent, they are not bad if you're fair to them. Not very good for music though. In fact, I'd go as far as to say they are pretty terrible for music!
They will get you going and then look to upgrade in future. At that price you should be able to sell them on quite easily and get at least two thirds of the cost back too.
