I have the opportunity to acquire an ex demo 50" KURO (PDP-LX5090) from my local specialist at a significant discount. Now this is a hifi specialist ex demo and not you're usual high street shop, so it's in perfect condition. I know they don't make them any more, but is this still a great display, or am I better off looking at something new around the £1.7k mark?

Do these still out perform everything else as far as blacks are concerned? I like the look of the new Panasonic HD freesat ones.
Panny V10 and Z1 once set up are very very very close. The King still lives however.

The shop owner said he would be looking to let it go for about £1600, which is about £600 off the retail price, so I am tempted. However if there's a new gen panel, that's as good, or better for the same money, then I would be interested to hear opinions.
I guess it depends how many hours it has done-do they still have timers in the service menu??Dave_ST220 said:

I forgot that plasma is more time sensitive than LCD
Complete and utter nonsense. Both technologies are good for IRO 50K hours before getting to half brightness (when they are said to be end of life).
If its a demo set work on the basis that its been on 10 hours a day, every day since it was put up there which could be as early as July 2008.
So say about 4000 hours, roughly.

The Pioneer's Freeview PQ is better than the Panasonic's, but with the new G/V/Z models all being FreeSat equipped, it may be a moot point.
Either way, Pioneer have said they've 8 years of parts stocked and will support their Plasmas for that length of time, so there's no reason not to get one, if it's the preferred choice over Panasonic's offerings.

Much as I love the Pansonic Z1 the Pioneer is still the choice for me whilethere are units out there. If you are comparing the V10 to the 5090 or 500a then it is the Pioneer everytime.

For what reasons? I've not viewed either yet but the Z1 seems to have a massive cost price!!! (& for the amount of TV i watch it would have to be pretty darn good to justify double the cost).Nick
The Z1 is a good bit more expensive at £5k for the 54" but it does produce a remarkable picture. The Pioneer outclasses the V10 to my eyes with far better black levels and an overall richer picture. The Pansonic is very good, with excellent blacks and colour as well as motion but the Pioneer just beats it.
Part of the appeal of the Pioneer is the clean lines and option for no speakers. Compared with the V10 the Pioneer has a better look IMO. Against the Z1 it is a different story though. The Panasonic is very thin, exceptionally well built and to me looks a lot better with the brushed aluminium bezel. Feature wise the Z1 has a superb interface for streaming Jpegs or video content. The picture viewer is quicker than almost anything else I have seen.

No one seems to have mentioned the Z1s unique selling point,
which is the wireless HD system it has between the media box and the
screen. This little feature really is a worlds first, nobody has
managed this trick before and it makes wall mounting an absolute
doddle ( and it works up to 10m )
Also the picture Quality is simply stunning in its own way as good
as the Kuro but differant if you know what I mean!
The wireless system is the only one that I know of that'll transmit
1080p with no loss of quality at all
And it looks absolutley stunning, if it had a B&O or Loewe badge on the
front there'd be no moaning over the price, the build quality is better than
i've seen in years.
